GREEK PROVERBS TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH (Excerpts)

1. Αγάλι αγάλι το φιλί, να 'χει και νοστιμάδα.
By degrees the kissing so that it can be tasty.
~Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
~Love me little, love me long.

2. Αγάλι αγάλι φύτευε ο φρόνιμος τ' αμπέλι,
κι αγάλι αγάλι γίνονταν η αγουρίδα μέλι.
By degrees the prudent man planted a vineyard;
by degrees the green grapes became as sweet as honey.
~Everything comes to him who waits.

3. Αγάπα η Μάρω το χορό, ήβρε και άντρα βιολιστή.
Mary was fond of dancing, so she found a fiddler for her husband.

4. Αγάπα το φίλο σου με τα ελαττώματά του.
Love your friend with his foibles.

5. Αγαπάει ο Θεός τον κλέφτη, αγαπάει και το νοικοκύρη.
God loves the burglar, but he loves the householder too.

6. Άγει δε προς φως την αλήθειαν χρόνος.*
Time leads truth to light.
~Time trieth truth.
~Time will tell.

7. "Άγιε Νικόλα, βόηθα με!" - "Κούνα κι εσύ το χέρι σου".
''St. Nicholas, help me!'' - ''Give yourself a hand as well''.
~God helps him who helps himself.

8. Άγουρος βρακί εφόρει, κάθε πάτημα το εθώρει.
A novice was dressed in breeches and watched them every step.

9. Αδικομαζώματα, διαβολοσκορπίσματα.
~Ill-gotten gain is scattered by the devil.
~Ill-gotten, ill-spent.

10. Αεί κολοιός παρά κολοιώ ιζάνει.*
A jackdaw always sits near a jackdaw.
~Birds of a feather flock together.

11. Αετόν ίπτασθαι διδάσκεις.*
You are teaching an eagle to fly.
~Jack Sprat would teach his grand-dame.
~You can't teach your grandmother to suck eggs.

12. Αετός ου θηρεύσει τας μυίας.*
An eagle does not catch flies.

13. Αθανάτους μεν πρώτα θεούς, νόμω ως διάκειται, τίμα.*
First of all, thou must honour the immortal gods, as the law ordains.

14. Αι δεύτεραι πως φροντίδες σοφώτεραι.*
Second thoughts are ever wiser.

15. Αιδείσθαι πολιοκροτάφους.*
Respect old age.

16. Αιέν αριστεύειν.*
Always to excel.

17. Ακάλεστος συμπέθερος δεν βρίσκει που να κάτσει.
An uninvited in-law finds no space to sit.

18. Ακαμάτης νιος, γέρος διακονιάρης.
A lazy youth, when old, a beggar.

19. "Ακαμάτρα, βράσ' κουκιά!" - "Ας τα φάγωμε κι ωμά."
''Lazy woman, boil broad beans!'' - ''No matter; we can eat them raw.''

20. Ακόμα δεν απέθανα κι ανάψαν τα κεριά μου.
I am not yet dead, but they have lit my candles.

21. Ακόμα δεν εστήθη το χωριό, διακονιαραίοι φτάσανε!
The building of the village was not yet complete, and the beggars arrived!

22. Ακόμα δεν τον είδαμε, "Γιάννη" τον εβγάλαμε.
Before seeing him, we called him John.

23. Άκουε πολλά, λάλει καίρια.*
Listen carefully, speak seasonably.

24. Άκουσε γέρου συμβουλή και παιδεμένου γνώση.
Take an old man's counsel and an experienced man's knowledge.

25. Άκουσε πολλά και λέγε λίγα.
Listen to all, say little.
~A wise head keeps a closed mouth.

26. Ακριβός στα πίτουρα και φτηνός στ' αλεύρι.
Expensive in barn and cheap in flour.
~Penny wise and pound foolish.

27. Αλησμονιούνται κι οι φιλιές, ξεχνιούνται κι οι αγάπες,
συναπαντιούνται και μιλούν σαν ξένοι, σαν διαβάτες.
Friendships and loves are forgotten, and when they meet,
they talk like strangers, like passers-by.

28. Αλιά στον Αλή, που έχασε το γομάρι του και π'λαλεί.
Pity Ali who has lost his donkey and runs.

29. Αλιά του που τον δέρνουν δεκαοχτώ και δεν τον δέρνει ο νους του.
Pity him who is struck by eighteen, but not by his own reason.

30. Αλίμονο εις τους δαρμένους, ώσπου οι κριτές να έρθουν.
Pity for those who have been beaten till the arrival of the judges.

31. Αλίμονο σ' αυτόν που δεν έχει νύχια να ξυστεί μόνος του.
Pity the man who has no nails to scratch himself.

32. Αλίμονο στον αντρειωμένο, αν τον πιάσουν δυο σπασμένοι.
Pity the brave man, if caught by two weaklings.

33. Αλλ' ηδύ τοι σωθέντα μεμνήσθαι πόνων.*
It is sweet for the saved man to recall labour.
~Past labour is pleasant.
~After the work is done, repose is sweet.

34. Άλλα λέει η θειά μου, άλλα ακούν τ' αυτιά μου.
My aunt says one thing, and my ears hear another.

35. Άλλα λέει κι άλλα κάνει.
He says one thing and does another.

36. Άλλα τα μάτια του λαγού κι άλλα της κουκουβάγιας.
The eyes of the hare are different from those of the owl.

37. Άλλα το βόδι σκέφτεται κι άλλα ο ζευγολάτης.
The ox has one thought, the ploughman another.

38. Άλλαι μεν βουλαί ανθρώπων, άλλα δε θεός κελεύει.*
Men's wishes are different from what God orders.
~When Heaven appoints, man must obey.
~Man proposes, God disposes.

39. Άλλαξε ο Μανωλιός κι έβαλε τα ρούχα αλλιώς.
Manolios changed; he turned his clothes inside-out.

40. Άλλες νυφάδες ήρθανε, άλλα κουλούρια πλάθουνε.
Other daughters-in-law came, they make other cookies.

41. Αλλιώς μου τά 'λεγες, παπά, πριν σε χειροτονήσουν.
You spoke to me differently, father, before you were ordained.

42. Άλλο να ιδείς κι άλλο ν' ακούσεις.
To see is one thing, to hear is another.

43. Άλλοι κάμον, άλλοι ώναντο.*
Some laboured, others profited.
~One does the work, another gets the profit.
~One beats the bush and another catches the bird.

44. Άλλοι παπάδες ήρθανε, άλλα βαγγέλια φέρανε.
Other priests came, other gospels they brought.

45. Άλλος αγαπά τον παπά κι άλλος την παπαδιά.
Some love the priest and some love the priest's wife.

46. Άλλου καίγονταν τα γένια κι άλλος άναβε τσιγάρο.
While one man's beard was burning, another was lighting a cigarette.

47. Αλλού με τρίβεις, δέσποτα, κι αλλού έχω τον πόνο.
You rub me, master, in one place but I have a pain in another.

48. Αλλού ο παππάς κι αλλού τα ράσα του.
The priest is in one place, and his robe in another.

49. Αλλού τα κακαρίσματα, κι αλλού γεννούν οι κότες.
Here the hens cackle, there they lay eggs.

50. Αλλού το όνειρο κι αλλού το θάμα.
