Syndicate Greek Translation News: RSS feeds added in Translatum
«

Translatum now offers its content for syndication with RSS, RSS2 and XML feeds.
The link for translatum rss:
Code:
http://feedproxy.google.com/translatum/lNwJ
Or
Code:
http://www.translatum.gr/forum/index.php?type=rss;action=.xml
Or if you want RSS from a specific board only you change the board number. In the one below you will get RSS for the English->Greek board.
Code:
http://www.translatum.gr/forum/index.php?action=.xml&board=2;type=rss2;sa=recent
If you want RSS from more than one boards you add more than one board numbers. In the one below you will get RSS for the English->Greek and Greek->English board.
Code:
http://www.translatum.gr/forum/index.php?action=.xml&board=2,3;type=rss2;sa=recent
If you want RSS from the English->Greek board and all its
child boards
(specialist terminology).
Code:
http://www.translatum.gr/forum/index.php?action=.xml&board=2,57,58,59,60,61,62,64,65,67,79,81;type=rss2;sa=recent
If you want RSS from the Greek->English board and all its
child boards
(specialist terminology).
Code:
http://www.translatum.gr/forum/index.php?action=.xml&board=3,69,70,71,72,73,74,76,77,80,82;type=rss2;sa=recent
If you want RSS from the Greek->English board and the English->Greek board and all their
child boards
(specialist terminology).
Code:
http://www.translatum.gr/forum/index.php?action=.xml&board=3,69,70,71,72,73,74,76,77,80,82,2,57,58,59,60,61,62,64,65,67,79,81;type=rss2;sa=recent
First off, what is an RSS feed? Also, how do I subscribe to an RSS feed and why would I want to?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and it's basically a computer-readable summary of the content of a Web page. This summary might be just the headlines of the articles on the page, the headlines plus a sentence or two excerpt of the articles, or even the headlines plus the entire articles. These are known as "headline only", "headline + excerpt" and "full text" feeds, respectively.
Typically, you recognize an RSS feed because there's a cute little orange or blue button labeled "XML", "RDF" or "RSS".
The format of the text document is presented as XML, a list of articles each tagged like this, for example:
Code:
<title>Syndicate Greek Translation News: RSS feeds added in Translatum</title>
<description>First off, what is an RSS feed? Also, how do I subscribe to an RSS feed and why would I want to?</description>
<link>http://www.translatum.gr/forum/index.php/topic,759.0.html</link>
The real benefit of subscribing to an RSS feed from a site is that you no longer need to visit the site itself to stay up-to-date on what's being discussed.
You can download rss readers (which will convert the above code to human readable format) which are standalone applications or add-ons, like
pluck
which is an add-on to Internet Explorer. In the attachment you can see translatum's RSS feed as seen with pluck from Internet Explorer.
Also, many browsers support natively rss feeds, highly recommended are
Firefox
and
Opera
.
You can add
?wap
to any forum URL in order to access it via your mobile (Wireless Acess Protocol). To see what it looks like use this URL
http://www.translatum.gr/forum/index.php?wap
with the following WAP emulator
http://www.waptiger.com/waptiger/
If you have a web site you can use our
javascript code
to display translatum's latest topics.

Συγχαρητήρια για την καινοτομία!
(F.Y.I. Η Opera, ο Firefox --ακόμα και το Thunderbird(!) που είναι mail-agent (δηλ. mail-client)--
ήδη υποστηρίζουν RSS feeds εγγενώς, δηλ. προσφέρουν ενσωματωμένη υποστήριξη,
χωρίς να χρειάζεται κάποιο εξωτερικό plugin 8) ....).

Indeed you can! Firefox has a feature called "Live Bookmarks" which is not exactly a feed viewer but adds a "live" bookmark in your Bookmarks.
When you visit a site and you see the orange RSS icon (or just an organge icon
) in the bottom right part of the Firefox browser window (the status bar), you can add the feed(s) by clicking the RSS icon and subscribing to it. The Add Bookmark dialog appears and you can add the Live Bookmark.
Then you can either access your bookmarks directly or open the Bookmarks Sidebar (View->Sidebar->Bookmars)
You can also add the Live bookmarks to the Bookmarks Toolbar Folder so you can have a quick peek at recent posts with just one mouse click.

Also the forthcoming Internet Explorer 7, will support RSS and RSS2.
(When IE7 will be available for downloading is still a mystery. Maybe "in a Μicrosoft week", i.e. it will delay some months... LOL)
Άν έχετε φτάσει μέχρι το σημείο να κάνετε την ερώτηση "εντάξει, αλλά ποιό πρόγραμμα να διαλέξω"; έχω κάτι για σας:
Νέα έκδοση του
RRS Owl
για τα RSS Feed σας.

Really cool!
It's easy to use and fits nicely into your schedule (no more news mails with useless articles and no more wasting time searching all those web pages). Very quick and convenient for those who have a slow Internet connection. I like the whole concept.
Just a couple of things about Translatum RSS:
The user name of the authors is not shown in the headline or excerpt of messages. Only emails can be seen (if announced by the user).
Is it possible to sign in using my login, so that only unread posts are downloaded in the RSS reader (instead of all recent posts)?

As far as signing in this is not possible as the RSS format does not carry any cookie (and hence membership) information.

In
Thunderbird
we can apply any ready-made (or custom) filter for the E-mails, in our RSS feeds.
So, if we just want to see the
unread RSS
all we have to do is to select at the filters box the option
View: Unread
. (Note -- the filters box
View
, must not be confused with the menu command
View
.)
Hope that helps a little.
(Actually we can get more stuff, other than documents, in our RSS feeds, but that's another post...)

Thanks a lot, it did help. I've got RSSOwl but I might also give it a shot with Thunderbird.

Αγγελική,
Στο RSSOwl: Δοκίμασες να πατήσεις το κενό τετράγωνο στα αριστερά του «Τίτλος Νέων», ακριβώς πάνω από τη στήλη με τα σφαιρίδια;

Code:
http://www.translatum.gr/forum/index.php?action=.xml;type=rss2;sa=recent;limit=10
