Τα βαθυσκάφη είναι υποβρύχια σκάφη, τα οποία έχουν σκοπό την παρατήρηση του πυθμένα θαλασσών και λιμνών, καθώς και την παρατήρηση της θαλάσσιας ζωής σε διάφορα βάθη. Οι διαστάσεις τους είναι μικρές, καθώς δεν έχουν σχεδιαστεί για να μεταφέρουν υλικά και προσωπικό σε μεγάλες αποστάσεις. Μπορεί να είναι συνδεδεμένα με καλώδια ή/και αγωγούς με το σκάφος επιφανείας, ή να είναι αυτόνομα. Υπάρχουν επανδρωμένα και μη επανδρωμένα βαθυσκάφη. Τα μη επανδρωμένα ελέγχονται από το σκάφος επιφανείας με ενσύρματη ή ασύρματη επικοινωνία. Ένα ηλεκτρονικό σύστημα είναι εγκατεστημένο στο βαθυσκάφος για να ελέγχει τις κινήσεις του και να διεξάγει μετρήσεις και παρατηρήσεις με τα όργανα που διαθέτει. Τα επανδρωμένα βαθυσκάφη έχουν υψηλές τεχνολογικές απαιτήσεις, αφού πρέπει να είναι κατάλληλα για να φιλοξενήσουν ανθρώπους σε πολύ υψηλή πίεση. Έτσι, πρέπει να διαθέτουν τον απαιτούμενο χώρο, συστήματα υποστήριξης της ζωής και ιδιαίτερα στιβαρή κατασκευή.

A Deep Sea Submergence Vehicle (DSV) is a deep diving manned submarine that is self-propelled. The term DSV is generally one used by the United States Navy, though several navies operate vehicles that can be accurately described as DSVs. DSVs are commonly divided into two types: research DSVs, which are used for exploration and surveying, and DSRVs (Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle), which can be used for rescuing the crew of a sunken submarine and/or clandestine (espionage) missions (primarily installing wiretaps on undersea cables). DSRV type vessels are equipped with docking chambers to allow personnel ingress/egress via a manhole.

Το βαθυσκάφος Deepsea Challenge αναπτύχθηκε από Αυστραλούς μηχανικούς και ήταν ίσως το μόνο που μπορούσε να αντέξει την άβυσσο της τάφρου -σε βάθος 11 χιλιομέτρων, η πίεση φτάνει τις 1.000 ατμόσφαιρες.

A submersible is a small vehicle designed to operate underwater. The term submersible is often used to differentiate from other underwater vehicles known as submarines, in that a submarine is a fully autonomous craft, capable of renewing its own power and breathing air, whereas a submersible is usually supported by a surface vessel, platform, shore team or sometimes a larger submarine. In common usage by the general public, however, the word submarine may be used to describe a craft that is by the technical definition actually a submersible. There are many types of submersibles, including both manned and unmanned craft, otherwise known as remotely operated vehicles or ROVs. Submersibles have many uses worldwide, such as oceanography, underwater archaeology, ocean exploration, adventure, equipment maintenance/recovery or underwater videography.
