Surely, this surname, and the equivalent
Καλαϊτζής does not mean a caroler but what in modern Greek we call “κασσιτερωτής» or, in demotic Greek, "γανωτής" or "γανωματής" or "γανωτζής" (etymology from the ancient Greek word γανώω-ώ, meaning cover with tin, shine). More in use is the word «καλαϊτζής» originating from the Turkish word for covering cooking utensils with a thin layer of tin (kalay in Turkish, from the Arabic word for tin qala). The professions in Turkish have an ending in -Τζής (-ci); therefore, καλαϊτζής or καλαντζής, the artisan who does this kind of work (from Turkish kalayci). See the Greek surnames blog
