Hi All!

I would appreciate some expert opinions. I wasn't quite sure where to post this.

Problem: I can't put my finger on quite the right translation for εντρυφώ, as in the example given in this excellent resource here:

'Εντρυφούν στη μελέτη της φιλοσοφίας.' (From: Λεξικό της κοινής νεοελληνικής)

I am discussing this (and have been doing so for the past ten years ;-D!) with my equally nutty, language-obsessed friend, Αγγελική, in Athens. We haven't found the right word yet, and it came up again during the course of a telephone conversation yesterday.

Any ideas/suggestions from y'all 'super translators' here? ;-)

Why not "indulge in" as in the following example:

Several of my closest friends had certain exploratory inclinations, leanings which had led them  to indulge in the study of philosophy or science or in one case at least, politics, one of them being the most amusing and indiscriminate world reformer, whose forum and enthralled audience happened to be whatever acquaintances he made in whatever bar he inhabited on a given night or afternoon.

From: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?hl=el&gbv=2&gs_l=hp.12...1825l15912l0l17831l22l22l0l5l0l0l234l2684l0j13j3l16l0.llsin.&q=cache:ErCMtr9crNcJ:http://www.tadamhill.com/America.html+%22indulge+in+the+study+of+philosophy%22&ct=clnk

Another option is  "delve into".  Again from the example you are referring see: http://www.google.gr/search?q=%22delve+into+the+study+of+philosophy%22&hl=el&gbv=2&gs_l=hp.12...4898l19032l0l21107l20l20l0l5l0l0l344l2732l0j8j3j2l13l0.llsin.&oq=%22delve+into+the+study+of+philosophy%22&aq=f&aqi=&aql=

See also "relish the study of philosophy" (http://www.google.gr/search?hl=el&source=hp&q=%22relish+the+study+of+philosophy%22&gbv=2&oq=%22relish+the+study+of+philosophy%22&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_l=hp.12...2636l20904l0l22901l32l32l0l17l0l0l297l1998l1j10j1l12l0.llsin.).

Πάρα πολλές αναφορές "enjoy studying..." καθώς και "enjoy studying"/"have a liking for the study".

mavrodon - Hi!

Thank you very much!

'indulge in' was a translation that my Greek friend and I settled upon several years ago, but now the topic has come up again.

She says that εντρυφώ has more emphasis on the studying, whereas indulge in has more emphasis on pleasure/enjoyment (true!), so therefore, indulge in doesn't quite fit the bill! (???)

What an endlessly fascinating subject translation is...;-)!

P.S. The other suggestions are great! I particularly like 'relish...'

Thanks very much indeed.

I understand. In that case, and for the time being,  I propose the following options: "absorbed in the study of..."/"peruse studying"/devote oneself to (in) the study of..."/"persuse studying...".

Okay!

I guess there isn't a single word/verb that'll 'do the biz'! (Που ταιριάζει, δηλαδή.)

We can keep searching, though! ;-)

I agree. The search for the optimal word is almost endless. Perhaps, other members of the forum will offer their lights. Thank you for the wishes for Easter and the funny picture!

"Delve into philosophy" is a good option (also: study in depth, delight in, revel in, devote oneself to [the study of]) but I think your original sentence "Εντρυφούν στη μελέτη της φιλοσοφίας" is tautological. It should be:

Εντρυφούν στη φιλοσοφία
or
Μελετούν (τη) φιλοσοφία

Thank you very much, Spiros!

I think they're all very good options:-)!

I agree with you about the original sentence, and so does my friend, Αγγελική! It wasn't my own example; it was from...
