SYMPTOMS
When a Web page is requested, you receive the following error message at the top of the Web browser:
The page cannot be found
The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.
You receive the following error message further down on the Web page:
HTTP 404 - File not found

CAUSE
The Web server returns the "HTTP 404 - File not found" error message when it cannot retrieve the page that was requested.

The following are some common causes of this error message:
•   The requested file has been renamed.
•   The requested file has been moved to another location and/or deleted.
•   The requested file is temporarily unavailable due to maintenance, upgrades, or other unknown causes.
•   The requested file does not exist.
•   IIS 6.0: The appropriate Web service extension or MIME type is not enabled.
•   A virtual directory is mapped to the root of a drive on another server.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, verify that the file requested in the browser's URL exists on the IIS computer and that it is in the correct location.

Use the IIS Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in to determine where the file requested must exist in the IIS computer's file system.

This is particularly important if the Web site uses a virtual directory (VDIR). A VDIR is a directory that is not contained in the home directory of the Web site, but appears to client browser as though it does. This virtual directory must be mapped to a subfolder on a drive or reference the files by name.

For example, assume that the URL that caused the 404 error is http://Microsoft.Com/Test/File1.htm, and the IIS snap-in shows that for Microsoft.Com Web site, the /Test/ directory is actually a virtual directory that maps to the location of c:\Information on the IIS computer. This means that you must verify that the File1.htm file is located in the c:\Information directory (and that the file name is spelled correctly).

IIS6 Dynamic Content: A 404.2 entry in the W3C Extended Log file is recorded when a Web Extension is not enabled. Use the IIS Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in to enable the appropriate Web extension. Default Web Extensions include: ASP, ASP.net, Server-Side Includes, WebDAV publishing, FrontPage Server Extensions, Common Gateway Interface (CGI). Custom extensions must be added and explicitly enabled. See the IIS 6.0 Help File for more information.
IIS6 Static Content: A 404.3 entry in the W3C Extended Log file is recorded when an extension is not mapped to a known extention in the MIME Map property. Use the IIS Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in to configure the appropriate extension in the MIME Map. See the IIS 6.0 Help file for more information.

SYMPTOMS
After you upgrade Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server, you cannot connect to the Exchange Server computer using Outlook Web Access (OWA). When you try to connect to the OWA server, you may receive an HTTP 404 "Page cannot be displayed" error message.

Also, when you start the Internet Services Manager, right-click Default Web Site, click Properties, and then click the ISAPI Filters tab, if two Exchfilt.dll files appear, you receive the "Page cannot be displayed" error message. However, no errors or warnings are logged in Windows NT Event Viewer, and any other virtual directories or Web pages that are stored on the default Web site load correctly.

NOTE: If you have installed Exchange 2000 Conference Server on this computer, you will see "Microsoft Exchange Conferencing Web Component" as the name of the ISAPI filter.

When the Exchange Server 5.5 version of the Exchfilt.dll file appears, the Exchange 2000 version of Exchfilt.dll does not load. Depending on your authentication method, you may also receive the following error message:
HTTP 404 "File not found."
If you view the IIS logs for the Web site, you see that the 404 error is returned after the HTTP GET request is redirected to the Exchange/USA/Username folder. The USA folder is only used in Exchange Server 5.5, and it does not exist in Exchange 2000.

NOTE: USA is a localization folder. The USA folder may be replaced with a different language folder if OWA is set up for multiple language support.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if Exchange 2000 Setup did not remove the existing Exchange Server 5.5 version of the Exchfilt.dll file from the list of ISAPI filters that are loaded by the default Web site. The old Exchange Server 5.5 Exchfilt.dll file automatically tries to redirect the user to the USA folder.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue:
1.   Click Start, point to Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Services Manager.
2.   Right-click Default Web Site, and then click Properties.
3.   Click the ISAPI Filters tab.
4.   Click exchfilt, and then click Remove.
5.   Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: Do not delete the Microsoft Exchange Web Component entry on the ISAPI filters tab. This filter is the Exchange 2000 OWA ISAPI filter component and must be present for OWA to work properly.

To differentiate between the two versions of the Exchfilt.dll file, compare the location and the version stamps of each file. The Exchange Server 5.5 Exchfilt.dll file is located in %SystemRoot%\System32, by default. The Exchange 2000 Exchfilt.dll file is located in C:\Exchsrvr\Bin, by default. (For new installations, the files are located in C:\Program files\Exchsrvr\Bin, by default.) The version stamp of the files indicates which .dll is the correct version to use with Exchange 2000:

Όχι ότι είμαι ειδήμων επί του θέματος, αλλά αυτό το θρίλερ μου θυμίζει κάτι ανάλογο που πέρασα ένα χρόνο πριν. Τότε που πρέπει να ήμουν η μόνη στον κόσμο που είχε ακόμη τα windows 98. Το μόνο προσωρινό γιατρικό που είχα τότε ανακαλύψει, πριν μάθω για Mozilla, spyware κτλ. ήταν να μπαίνω στον ΙΕ από το MS Messenger από το οποίο λειτουργούσε κανονικά. Φαντάζομαι ότι εφόσον μπεις μια φορά κανονικά σε αυτόν, θα μπορέσεις να τον εξαλείψεις εντελώς από το σύστημά σου (και από την επιφάνεις εργασίας, και από το σκληρό, και από όλους τους χρήστες του ΗΥ σου, και, και, και..., και αμέσως μετά να εφαρμόσεις όλες τις τακτικές άμυνας που ξέρεις (με χρονολογική σειρά βασισμένη ΜΟΝΟ σε πρακτική εμπειρία και όχι σε επαγγελματική γνώση: αντιβιοτικό, αντικατασκοπικό, backup, απενεργοποίηση προφύλαξης οθόνης και κάθε άλλου προγράμματος που τρέχει εν αγνοία σου ή λόγω χρονοδιαγράμματος που έχεις ορίσει (συνήθως) στην κάτω δεξιά γωνία του υπολογιστή σου, ανασυγκρότηση δίσκων- εννοείται σχολαστική, αυτή που κρατάει κανένα 10ωρο απ' όσο γνωρίζω).
Αν συνεχίσεις να έχεις πρόβλημα με τα υπόλοιπα προγράμματά σου (έκανα σαφές ότι έχεις εξοντώσει τον ΙΕ;) αυτό μπορεί να σημαίνει
Α) Ότι υπάρχει πραγματικά σοβαρό (αλλά όχι υπερβολικά σοβαρό ή άλυτο) πρόβλημα με τον ΗΥ σου, οπότε ή το δίνεις σε ΕΜΠΙΣΤΟ επαγγελματία να σου τον ''καθαρίσει'' (εγώ αυτό έκανα, άλλαξα σκληρό και λειτουργικά προγράμματα, δεν εμπιστευόμουνα ότι θα μου καθαρίσουν τον ΗΥ από όλους τους ιούς τους οποίους διατείνονταν ότι μπορεί να είχε, με αντάλλαγμα το βάρος τους σε χρυσάφι), ή κάνεις αυτό που μπορεί να κάνει η αδερφή μου, αλλά όχι εγώ: φορμάτ - Μη στεναχωριέσαι, έχεις ήδη κάνει backup των αρχείων σου σε διάφορα CD, οπότε δε χάνεις κανένα από αυτά-
Β) Ότι τα προγράμματα της microsoft που έχεις στον ΗΥ σου δεν είναι γνήσια, οπότε και η Microsoft σου κάνει σπάσιμο νεύρων. Ίσως έχεις μπει σε ιστοσελίδες της Microsoft και έκανες μεταφόρτωση, ή όταν (σίγουρα, τουλάχιστον μία φορά) σου έβγαλε ο ΙΕ μήνυμα λάθους εσύ επέλεξες ''Να αποσταλεί'', στη Microsoft, εννοείται. Η λύση σε αυτήν την περίπτωση είναι η ίδια με αυτήν της προηγούμενης. Εννοείται ότι στο μέλλον, είσαι πιο υποψιασμένη.

Bottom line: Ελπίζουμε για τα καλύτερα (24 ώρες πάνω από τον ΗΥ και χιλιάδες δισκάκια με αρχεία), προετοιμαζόμαστε για τα χειρότερα (πχ, μια βδομάδα χωρίς υπολογιστή και -100 εβρόπουλα από τον τραπεζικό σου λογαριασμό)

Προς αποφυγή παρεξηγήσεων, τονίζω ακόμη μία φορά, ότι τον τελευταίο μήνα, προσπαθώ να γίνω εντελώς...
Ξανθιά!!! Με αυτό εννοώ ότι όλα τα παραπάνω μπορεί να ήταν ο προσωπικός μου χρονοβόρος τρόπος να λύσω ένα πρόβλημα που μπορεί να λυθεί πιο εύκολα.
Στ' αλήθεια όμως ελπίζω να βοήθησα έστω και λιγάκι.

Πραγματικά βοηθήσατε και οι 2 πάρα πολύ. :-)
Με βάση αυτά που μου έδωσε η Δεινομάχη τώρα, ακολούθησα τα links που έδωσα και "ανακάλυψα" ότι θα πρέπει να επανεγκαταστήσω, από το cd των Windows, τον ΙΕ.
F_id, αυτό που αναφέρεις στο Β) είναι ίσως και πολύ πιθανό να μου έχει συμβεί.
Το γεγονός είναι ότι χτύπησα ένα "αηδιαστικό" 12ωρο μπροστά στον υπολογιστή και δεν αντάχω να τον βλέπω άλλο.
Θα την πέσω για ύπνο και αύριο βλέπουμε...

Λογικό. Αφού σου είπα ότι ο avant συνεργάζεται στενά με τον ΙΕ. Αν δεν λυθεί το πρόβλημα του ΙΕ σου, δεν θα τρέξει ομαλά ο avant. Βρήκες το cd των windows για να γιατροπορέψεις τον ΙΕ;
