When all is gone, there is still hope
« on: 05 Jul, 2009, 11:59:23 »
Translation: Kai gar hois meden, aute pareste

I've tried a number of different online translators, wondering which is correct?

Babelfish translator:
Όταν όλος πηγαίνουν, υπάρχει ακόμα ελπίδα

Babylon translator:
Όταν όλα είναι φύγει, υπάρχει ακόμη ελπίδα

Google Translator:
Όταν όλα είναι φύγει, υπάρχει ακόμα ελπίδα

Thanks for the help,

Joel

Όταν όλα χαθούν, υπάρχει ακόμη ελπίδα.

Slightly more emphatically: Κι όταν όλα χαθούν, υπάρχει ακόμη ελπίδα.

WRITING STYLE GUIDELINES
1. Be more or less specific.
2. It's not O.K. to use ampersands & abbreviations.
3. Exaggeration is a million times worse than understatement.
4. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are to be avoided.

Η ελπίδα επιζεί και στα χαλάσματα.

More poetic, but it does the trick.

But this is ancient Greek, and by whom?  Not Hesiod ...
Τί δέ τις; Τί δ' οὔ τις; Σκιᾶς ὄναρ ἄνθρωπος. — Πίνδαρος

Η ελπίδα χάνεται τελευταία.

@j126:  Here's the full version of your quotation*, attributed to Thales (Plutarch, "Symposium of the Seven Sages," Moralia 1.153d), in the original ancient Greek:

Τί κοινότατον; ἐλπίς.  καὶ γὰρ οἷς ἄλλο μηδέν, αὕτη πάρεστι.

— "What is most common?  Hope.  For those who have nothing else, that is always there."

*Ti koinotaton? Elpis. Kai gar hois allo meden, haute paresti.
