I went to a university that had this text on their china's crest, and I was able to translate the first word as "circumstance" and the second word as "man," but I can't find the third word anywhere.

You can see a JPG of the text on the crest here:

I really appreciate the help! Thank you!

Hi there.

The third word is ΔΕΙΚΝΥΟΥΣΙΝ  and the meaning is that "situations/circumstances demonstrate/show/indicate/prove what men/each man are/is like".

All the best,

Vicky

What a lovely crest. Wonder which university it belongs to.

I'm actually pretty positive that this imitates an old Greek saying, "ΑΡΧΗ ΑΝΔΡΑ ΔΕΙΚΝΥΣΙ", itself a variation of "ΑΡΧΗ ΑΝΔΡΑ ΔΕΙΞΕΙ" (=rule will show the man) in Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics.

It's Rice University's Baker College. Thanks so much for the help! I've read the Nicomachean Ethics, but never in the original.
