I begin -> ἄρχομαι
« on: 20 Apr, 2007, 16:25:07 »
Hi there.

I am trying to find the ancient Greek translation of the phrase "I begin" or the word "begin".

I have done a little homework on the net and came up with the following:

Modern translation = αρχίζω
Ancient translation =άρχομαι or archomai

If anyone can help by confirming the above, I would be very grateful.
Thanks

Andy

Right on all counts, Andy!  Thanks for doing your homework!

Thanks Billberg23.

Something else you may be able to help me with, if you have time?

I would like to know how the date "19-04-2007" would translate (if at all) into ancient Greek text.

Much obliged for your help!

Andy

Andy
19 = ιθ’ = ἐννεακαίδεκα
4   = δ’ = τέσσαρα
2007 = ,βζ’ = δισχίλια ἑπτά

So 19-4-2007 = ιθ’-δ’-,βζ’ .

Thanks Billberg.

I've just read on the forum that all ancient Greek text was in upper case.
If this is true, how would "άρχομαι" look once modified?

thanks again!

So is it correct form to produce all ancient Greek text in upper case?
or will lower case be ok. Must admit it looks much more... well, Greek in lowercase especially in the font I am using!
I need to get this right as it's for some art work I am producing.

Upper case is found in all ancient inscriptions and manuscripts, Andy, while lower case is found in most medieval manuscripts of ancient texts (where most of our extant texts are found!).  It's all a matter of your taste and aesthetics.  So feel free to use lower case, if you prefer.
