Non-unicode programs and Greek text
The problem:
Non-unicode programs, such as older versions of Adobe FrameMaker, make it impossible to perform copy / paste operations for Greek or any other text requiring special characters when copying from a saved file (i.e. Notepad), simply because that file must be saved in (converted to) Unicode to preserve the characters. This copied and pasted text becomes useless in a program like FrameMaker.
The solution:
If we copy the same text from the Notepad file, but instead paste it into a new Notepad window without saving, the text becomes usable again! It’s so simple that it could be easily missed.
In cases where a non-unicode program receives encoded text, information is actually lost and the characters show as question marks or Latin characters:
pasting the line “Μετά από την απαραίτητη ιατρική φροντίδα, δόθηκαν για υιοθέτηση.”
Comes out instead as: “?et? ap? t?? apa?a?t?t? ?at???? f???t?da, d????a? ??a ?????t?s?”
