Background music / file size in web pages

Question:
How can one use a musical background (the type that works in Internet Explorer or Opera) in HTML web pages? The tracks are about 60 seconds long. Midi files have no problem here due to their small size, but aren't suitable for a true musical recording. For any other filetype that I've seen, I can't get the file size much lower than 500 Kb which is way too high, although I don't know what the exact cutoff point would be. (I know that java script is one solution, but have reasons not to want to use it.)

Actually we have found the solution to this question...the problem was an error in the html coding, not the file size - works fine now :-)
