άλλη μια λέξη που όταν τη συναντώ, κατεβάζω καντήλια... δεν μου αρέσει καμία από τις αποδόσεις του eurodicautom, και ποτέ δεν έχω βρει μια απόδοση που να είναι to the point. Any ideas?

Μια φορά το είχα βάλει roof cabin, χωρίς να είμαι καθόλου ευχαριστημένη (τι δουλειά έχει ένα κτίριο γραφείων με την καλύβα του μπαρμπαΘωμά;)

Τωρα για το δώμα, σύμφωνοι όταν πρόκειται για την ταράτσα, αλλά όταν εννοούμε το δωμάτιο στην ταράτσα πως το λέμε; αυτό είναι το πρόβλημά μου...

I don't think so... A patio is usually on ground floor, isn't it? A "δώμα" is a small room or apartment on the roof of flat-roof buildings. Sometimes (often) it isn't even used for residential purposes: it may just be the little structure required for the staircase to reach the roof, or it may shelter machinery or equipment...

or was often the wash house in older buildings.

Suggestions:
(auxiliary) structure on top of the flat roof

I like (auxiliary) rooftop structure:-)
Only problem is it gives no indication as to the limited size of the structure...
In Greek "δώμα" is automatically associated with a small structure... that's why in the past I always resorted to words like cabin, or Billberg's shed... could we possibly come up with a noun that defines a small structure (like a cabin or shed), but without leading to associations with "the little house on the prairie"?
(yes, I'm THAT ancient...:-)))))

πλησιάζει η ώρα να βάλω το δώμα, και το νήμα αυτό έχει μείνει πίσω! Να προτιμήσω το ουδέτερο "rooftop structure", ή το "rooftop shack" (που αφήνει και υπονοούμενα για άλλες χρήσεις και είναι πιο γλυκούλι:-))))))
Μήπως σκεφτήκατε κάτι άλλο;

"Shack" is more than "informal."  It usually designates an old, poorly built, deteriorating structure.
How about "outbuilding"?

I'm afraid room-in-roof is no more than the American attic... (just click google pictures in the previous link for a quick view). That's why the pdf distinguishes between flat-roof and room-in-roof...
I'm thinking of using rooftop cabin (being less "derogatory" than the good old shack...)
flash idea: how about booth? a booth being a small space that encloses some kind of equipment... that's the case here, if it was residential, I would consider roof-top apartment... but this is just a space accommodating ventilation fans etc...

Όταν αυτό το κατασκεύασμα δεν αποτελεί κύριο αρχιτεκτονικό στοιχείο των Αγγλοσαξόνων, μην προσπαθείς να βρεις μια σύντομη απόδοση που θα περιέχει όλα τα απαραίτητα στοιχεία για τον ξένο: και το ότι μπορεί να γίνει δωματιάκι-εργαστήριο και πλυσταριό και αποθηκούλα, αλλά και το ότι είναι πάνω σε ταράτσα (flat roof) και όχι όποια-όποια στέγη.

Ακόμα και η φλύαρη πρότασή μου, auxiliary structure on top of the flat roof, θεωρώ ότι είναι ανεπαρκής γιατί θα μπορούσε να είναι άλλου είδους κατασκευή. Ίσως κάτι ακόμα πιο φλύαρο, auxiliary or storage room on top of the flat roof. Και μόνο αν επαναλαμβάνεται μπορείς να επιχειρήσεις βραχύτερη αναφορά.
