Title: How to speed up your typing and save time in Word and other applications?
Post by: spiros on 30 Mar, 2006, 04:57:32
I have about 10.000 autocorrect entries and it speeds up my typing a lot when I use Word. Many of them are simply Greek words without accents which are accented automatically. Others, are abbreviations which are expanded, i.e. in order to produce the word πράγμα I simply enter πγ; similarly, to produce the word πράγματα I enter πγτ, and so on. I also use it a lot with two-word expressions. For example, I never type κωδικός πρόσβασης, I type κδπρ instead. You catch my drift...

However, there are some bugs in Word. For example, if I type πγφ and then delete φ and enter τ the expansion will not work. To make it work again I either have to restart Word, or add an autocorrect entry by right-clicking on a non-accented Word, then moving to autocorrect, and then selecting the accented version of the word.

Importing and exporting these entries is a different issue, handled by a macro (I will talk about this in a different tip).

Of course, we enter text in other applications apart from Word. It could be DVX (which by the way, always crashes badly when I try to import my autocorrect entries and is not very clever in the way it handles capitalizations) or TagEditor or any Windows application for that matter.

To do that you need some sort of Text Completion (https://www.translatum.gr/dics/translation-tools.htm) software (search for the "Text Completion" header). The one I use and highly recommend is As-U-Type (commercial: US$ 39.95, there are others which are freeware though). The latest version (3.2) has solved most problems with Greek (the only remaining problem is capitalization for first letter of sentences which does not appear to work).

So, if you are as lazy as I am, then it might do you good to check out these options!

Apart from being lazy, you also have to have a pretty strong memory to be able to remember the abbreviations you use (which, I assume, are not even close to 10,000, as that figure includes the correction of typos). By the time I'd managed to recall the abbreviation, I would have done typing my text (unless I was writing under the topic "Η επαναδραστηριοποίηση της σκουληκομυρμηγκότρυπας"). It's the problem I usually have with macros I have created. If I haven't used one for some time, I always have to look at the list to remind myself of the key combination I selected.

Having said that, I'm all for making the best of AutoCorrect.

Well, most of them are simply accented words. I reckon there are about 200-300 hundred Greek abbreviations I use quite a lot and save me an amazing amount of time (I also used to create project specific abbreviations - now I simply add them to MetaTexis as glossary entries and the English text is automatically replaced with the Greek equivalent using correct case to boot!).

For example, instead of είναι I enter the symbol ` (immediately left to the key with exclamation mark and 1), instead of και I use ~ (the same key using Shift). These alone, save me an awful lot of typing.

Hi Spiros,

Yes, I think this is a great technique (Autocorrect) and I had actually started doing this as it seemed logical to me. I will definately have a look at the link to learn how to set up a system policy.

By the way, since Nickel mentioned the σκουληκομυρμηγκότρυπα, I just realised I can now say it without faltering! Such progress!!

Happy translating!

Though I can easily remember things, I hate having to remember all those abbreviation. I type very fast which saves me all lost time trying to remember shortcuts or macros or any of this stuff. :-)

Well, I type very fast too. But this way, I am much more productive than the average person that types very fast ):

Smashing! So now begin practicing world's longest word (not real), Aristophane's
Λοπαδοτεμαχοσελαχογαλεοκρανιολειψανοδριμυποτριμματοσιλφιολιπαρομελιτοκατακεχυμενοκιχλεπικοσσυφοφαττοπεριστεραλεκτρυονοπτοπιφαλλιδοκιγκλοπελειολαγωοσιραιοβαφητραγανοπτερυγν.

(actually a cooking recipe, supposed to be pronounced as one word by ancient actors - I haven't heard any to tell you if it is possible)

Just a correction about As-U-Type which appears to work very well now with Greek. This is my message to the  developer (the only thing that really bugs me no is that capitalization after end of sentence does not work for Greek):

Quote
Actually, the problematic version was 3.1. This version appears to handle OK Greek characters.

One problem:

Hot keys: in order for them to work the keyboard must be set to English. For example if I press Ctrl+Shift+A+S and I have the Greek keyboard, the shortcut list window will not pop up. Isn't there a way for them to function no matter what keyboard is selected?

This problem has been fixed in the next upgrade of As-U-Type (version 3.3, which we're implementing right now). The final version will be there in May (hopefully, if there ain't many bugs -- since we put more features in the new upgrade as well)
