List of English stopwords

Quote
Stop words are those words which are so common that they are useless to index or use in search engines or other search indexes. Usually articles, adverbials or adpositions are stop words. In English some obvious stop words would be "a", "of", "the", "I", "it", "you", and "and". Hans Peter Luhn, one of the pioneers in information retrieval is credited with coining the phrase and using the concept in his design and implementation of KWIC indexing programs.

It should be noted that there is no definitive list of stop words, as they can depend on the purpose of the search. Full phrase searches, for example, would not want words removed. Also, if the search uses a Stemming algorithm then many words may not be needed in that searches stop list.
