Title: Trados: Reversing a Translation Memory to Enable Concordance for Target Language
Post by: spiros on 10 Mar, 2005, 00:47:49
My solution

Download Olifant, a translation memory editor. Go to Utilities Menu→ Swap source and target. This was it!

Olifant Help - Welcome (http://okapi.sourceforge.net/Release/Olifant/Help/)

Olifant is a Windows application that offers an interface to edit translation memory fields in various format, so you can add, delete and modify translation units and their meta-data. Olifant is freely available.

Some of Olifant functionalities are:

    * Conversion between formats with minimal lost.
    * Merging of several TMs together.
    * Management of attribute fields and their optional pick-lists.
    * The TM can be viewed with filtering and sorting options.
    * Easy identification of duplicates.
    * Possibility to export only a sub-set of the TM.
    * Flagging mechanism for easy manipulation of groups of translation units.
    * Search and replace function (including using regular expressions).
    * SQL queries, and filtering mechanism to display only a sub-set of the translation units.
    * Fonts and colors customization.
    * And much more...

SYMPTOMS

You would like to be able to use the Concordance feature in Trados Translator's Workbench to search content in the target language of your translation memory.

EXPLANATION

When using the Concordance feature, you are able to search content in the source language of your translation memory. To be able to search content in the target language, you can reverse your translation memory and add the reversed translation memory as a reference translation memory in Concordance searching.

STEPS

Follow these steps to reverse your translation memory and to add it as a reference memory for Concordance searching:

   1. Choose Export from the File menu in Trados Translator's Workbench and accept the default settings in the Export dialog box to export the whole content of your memory to a text file.
   2. Create a new translation memory in Trados Translator's Workbench by choosing New from the File menu.
   3. Select the target language of your original translation memory as the source language and the source language of your original translation memory as the target language. Save the new translation memory to a location of your choice.
   4. Choose File - Import to import the text file created in step 1 to the translation memory you created in the previous step.
   5. Choose File - Open in Trados Translator's Workbench to open your original translation memory.
   6. Choose Options, Translation Memory Options and go to the Concordance tab. Click Browse to select the memory you just created as the reference translation memory.
   7. Select Search first in reference translation memory to search the reference memory first during concordance searches.

You can now search for target language content when using the Concordance feature.

NOTE

You need to reverse your translation memory regularly to update it with the latest content.

You can also reverse the translation direction from within the Workbench.
I did a small presentation on how to create a Trados TM for translating in the opposite direction: http://www.slideshare.net/valtom/sdl-trados-two-tms-for-the-price-of-one.
The procedure is really easy, but obviously still not much in use.

SDLTmReverseLangs creates a new TM from an existing with the original source - target language pair reversed. For example given an English to Greek *.sdltm TM a new TM will be created with Greek as the source language and English as the Target.
