Whoever wrote this has evidently confused two idioms, "kick over the traces" (http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/traces) and "burn one's bridges" (http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/burn+bridges).  (S)he may mean to say that it was too late to rescue Father's academic career because he had already deviated too far from academic discipline.
