multae sub tegulis cubant noctuae –> many owls sleep under the roof tiles
A reference to Plutarch's Life of Lysander 16.2.10, riddling the difference between real owls and Athenian coinage:  αἰνιξάμενος ὑπὸ τῷ κεραμικῷ κοιτάζεσθαι πολλὰς γλαῦκας. ἦν γάρ, ὡς ἔοικε, τὸ χάραγμα τοῦ πλείστου τότε νομίσματος διὰ τοὺς Ἀθηναίους γλαῦκες — "Many 'owls,' says Gylippus' servant, "sleep under the roof tiles."
