In the same song I've already asked two questions on occurs the above phrase:-

Does it mean 'the mule used to go round in the windmill LIKE a hare' or 'the mule would go round the windmill and all day a hare would go around with the lantern'?
In the illustration in Domna Samiou's rendition there are mules in a circle going round on the lantern motif.
