What I am looking for is the Greek name that has the same/similar pronunciation as "Rory".

And is this name (in Greek) typically a male name?  female name?  or was a name used by both genders?

Yes, Leon, this is Spyros's attempt to imitate the pronunciation of Greek Γρηγόρη. In phonetic transcription it would be something like [γri'γori], but the only way to explain the sound of the soft Greek 'γ' is to say it sounds like the 'w' in 'worry'.
