Apart from our reluctance to mutilate an original text of Homer, we can't imagine putting the thought more succinctly than he already has. Note that your own English translation contains the same number of words as Homer's line! How could Homer's Greek be "shortened"? Be aware, too, that Homer's verse is metrical: if you change the words, you destroy the poetry.
