The Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) is a payment-integration initiative of the European Union for simplification of bank transfers denominated in euro. As of March 2012, SEPA consists of the 28 EU member states, the four members of the EFTA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) and Monaco.

O SEPA είναι ένας χώρος στον οποίο οι καταναλωτές, οι εταιρίες και οι λοιποί οικονομικοί παράγοντες θα είναι σε θέση να διενεργούν και να δέχονται εγχώριες και διασυνοριακές πληρωμές σε ευρώ με τα ίδια βασικά χαρακτηριστικά, τα ίδια δικαιώματα και υποχρεώσεις σε 32 ευρωπαϊκές χώρες, (οι 27 χώρες της Ε.Ε. και η Ισλανδία, η Νορβηγία, το Λιχτενστάιν, η Ελβετία και το Μονακό), μεταξύ αυτών και στην Ελλάδα. Σκοπός του SEPA είναι η δημιουργία μιας ενοποιημένης, ανταγωνιστικής και καινοτόμου αγοράς πληρωμών μικρής αξίας στον ευρωπαϊκό χώρο, όπου οι πληρωμές σε ευρώ, χωρίς μετρητά, θα διενεργούνται με τη χρήση ενός μόνο λογαριασμού πληρωμών και μιας ενιαίας δέσμης μέσων πληρωμών εξ ολοκλήρου ηλεκτρονικά.

The Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) initiative for the European financial infrastructure involves the creation of a zone for the euro in which all electronic payments are considered domestic, and where a difference between national and intra-European cross border payments does not exist. The project aims to improve the efficiency of cross border payments and turn the fragmented national markets for euro payments into a single domestic one: SEPA will enable customers to make cashless euro payments to anyone located anywhere in the area using only a single bank account and a single set of payment instruments. The project includes the development of common financial instruments, standards, procedures, and infrastructure to enable economies of scale. This should in turn reduce the overall cost to the European economy of moving capital around the region (estimated today as 2%-3% of total GDP).
