There once was a writer named Christopher Paul Curtis, and he wrote a book called Elijah of Buxton. One day, the jury of the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award decided that it was the best Canadian book for kids up to age 12 that they had seen all year, so they gave Mr. Curtis, pictured, an award of $20,000 to congratulate him.

Elijah of Buxton is about an 11-year-old boy who was a runaway slave but finds a safe place to live in Ontario. Just like Elijah, Mr. Curtis is an American who now lives in Ontario — Windsor, in fact. He went all the way to Toronto to accept his award Thursday night. The remaining four finalists were happy, too, because they split $10,000 among themselves. They were Hugh Brewster, Shane Peacock, Frieda Wishinsky and Kenneth Oppel, who wrote Darkwing.
