Microsoft Glossaries [only available for download to paid-up subscribers to MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network)]

free online search of Microsoft Glossaries and other multilingual dictionary engines

In November of 2003, Microsoft released new versions with material from Office and Windows XP, Windows 2003, and many other products for most languages (including Spanish, Italian, Finnish, Polish, Danish, Hungarian, Greek, Czech, Hindi, Iberian Portuguese, Latin American Portuguese, Thai, German, Turkish, Slovenian, Slovak, French, Dutch, Korean, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Swedish, Arabic, Hebrew, and Norwegian).

However, until a few days ago the Greek folder (and many others) only contained 2MBs of files which is a small fraction of what it should contain. After contacting Microsoft Hellas I am happy to inform you that this folder has been updated and you can now download the latest versions of Microsoft Glossaries.

I would like to express my gratitude to Microsoft Hellas Customer Service Deparment and especially Mr Χείλαρης whose e-mail I quote:

Quote
Κύριε Δόικα,

Σχετικά με το θέμα σας, στη διεύθυνση που αναφέρετε προστέθηκαν τα ενημερωμένα αρχεία για τα ελληνικά γλωσσάρια. Ευχαριστούμε πολύ για την ενημέρωση.

Με εκτίμηση,

It appears that the glossaries (currently available from ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/developr/msdn/newup/Glossary/) as well as other downloadable files from Microsoft will not be accessible via ftp from May 1st, 2005.

I received the following message when I logged in with WS_FTP:

Code: [Select]
We will be turning off ftp.microsoft.com on May 1st, 2005.
Please use the Download Center: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads
Thank you.

I did not yet find the glossaries under http://www.microsoft.com/downloads. Let's wait and see...

Here is another Microsoft page giving access some of its dictionaries http://www.microsoft.com/resources/glossary/default.mspx

Where exactly and how should I install these glossaries?

You do not "install" these dictionaries. They are in csv format (can be opened with Excel or a text editor). You can use one of the many tools to search in them.

See the
Find, Search/Replace Tools, Search Multiple Glossaries Tools (ie Microsoft) category in https://www.translatum.gr/dics/translation-tools.htm

The new Microsoft Translation Glossaries are available to paid-up subscribers to MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network).

The Microsoft Glossaries have now been renamed as the Microsoft Translation Glossaries, which makes clearer what they are. And I am delighted to say that people or companies with an MSDN subscription can now download the latest versions from the Microsoft Developer Network web site. Here's how to find them:

   1. Sign in to MSDN using your username and password.
   2. Click on MSDN Professional Downloads and Product Keys.
   3. In the left pane, click on Tools, SDKs and DDKs.
   4. Scoot down the list in the left pane until you see Microsoft Translation Glossaries.

To provide users with more up-to-date terminology, Microsoft has replaced the glossary content that was previously posted to the Microsoft ftp site with a more concise document (CSV format) that is easier to use.

This new CSV file contains over 14,000 English terms (about 7000 translated into Greek) plus the translations of the terms for up to 45 different languages. Microsoft provides the Microsoft terminology data to allow their customers, ISVs, and partners to have a more consistent user experience across the products they are using and developing.

Για όσους θέλουν να χρησιμοποιούν ακόμα τα αρχεία CSV, διευκολύνει πάρα πολύ το εργαλείο Examine32.
