ὑποσυρίζω → make a shrill piping sound, hiss (as of serpents) [ὑπό, "under," "below" + συριγμός, "hissing"]

Within the thread you quote the answer can be found. In one of the replies I see this:
From Liddell-Scott-Jones' Greek Lexicon:
ὑποσῡρ-ίζω, Att. ὑποσῡρ-ίττω,
whistle, rustle ...

The verb is based on ὑπό, "under," "below" + συριγμός, "shrill piping sound," "hissing" (as of serpents).  So it's actually somewhat onomatopoetic.
