Greetings to all members.
My name is Mark Allinson - a retired Australian academic (with little Latin and less Greek - English literature) and a fascination for Homer.
I have traveled in Greece, and love the place.
The reason I am here is to seek the opinion of members on some "translation" of
The Odyssey
I have been working on, especially from those who have some Homeric Greek.
I say "translation" since I have no formal training in Ancient or Homeric Greek. However, I find that with dictionaries, a range of respected English translations and the many online resources, such as Perseus, I can make some headway.
It is at present merely a hobby interest, but I would like any opinions about the possibility of publication.
My "translation" takes the form of a loose dactylic hexameter - an English approximation of the original meter.
So far I have completed half of Book I and a number of short, self-contained passages from other books.
Being new to this forum, I am not sure where to post a short passage, so I will await advice before I do.
Best wishes!

Hello Mark and welcome to our group. We are a lively sort of circle, serious in our work and fun to be with, as you will discover on the way. Being a very new member, I can assure you that from the fist moment I introduced myself, that being quite recently, I’ve been taken in with warmth and affection, making me feel completely at home. I’m sure you’ll find that out for yourself as time goes by.
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.

Thank you, "wings" (Vicky - I wasn't sure whether to register with my own name or a tag - but I am happy to use my real name).
Thank you for that warm welcome.
I have posted a short passage of my "translation" in the forum you indicated.
Thank you, too, mousafiris!
If the spirit of the site is anything like visiting Greece, with all its welcome, I am sure to enjoy myself here.
And I might even pick up some language.
At present, I feel a bit of a fraud to be here as a virtual monolingual.
