On behalf of a friend, who on occassion takes on freelance translation/editing work, I would like to know what the current going rate is for editing a dictionary.

The work involves checking for spelling, syntax, meaning, but also making sure that the terminology/examples used are current, modern and up-to-date.  Older or more obscure meanings are edited out and newer meanings, phrases etc. are used to replace them.

Thank you!

Tell your friend there is no standard rate.

He should do about 16 typical pages of the work involved in order to calculate exactly how long it takes him to do the job at a professional level. Only then can he have an inkling of how much to charge, on the basis of what he expects to get for each hour of his working day. And only on condition that the level of the work does not change dramatically between sections.
