Όλοι οι ρεμπέτες του ντουνιά
εμένα μ' αγαπούνε
μόλις θα μ' αντικρίσουνε
θυσία θα γινούνε.

Όσοι δε με γνωρίζουνε
τώρα θα με γνωρίσουν
εγώ κάνω τη τσάρκα μου
κι ας με καλαμπουρίζουν.

Εγώ φτωχός γεννήθηκα
τον κόσμο έχω γυρίσει
μέσα απ' τα φύλλα της καρδιάς

Όλοι οι κουτσαβάκηδες
που ζούνε στο κουρμπέτι
έχουνε στη καρδούλα τους
πολύ μεγάλο ντέρτι.

The original (and Turkish) meaning of κουρμπέτι (Turkish 'gurbet') is "(living in a) foreign land, away from home". It is currently understood to mean "the daily struggle to survive", and the colloquial phrase "χρόνια στο κουρμπέτι" usually means "long life experience" or "long experience on the job".

Koutsavakides were the braggadocios of Psiri. Read about them here (http://www.athensguide.com/psiri.html).

Vamvakaris uses the term in a more favourable light. I think he means "all the brave men who live in exile" (usually those who had to emigrate to find work in foreign lands).

Wow, thanks again for your help!  As a lyric poet, Markos, in my opinion, ranks right up there with Archilochos (another emigrant from the Cyclades).
