The Little Witch

From times past                           I have a deep longing
     to go out to distant seas          to find the Little Witch

Elusive as a fairy                           in the beauty of May
     which if you make it fragrant     alas for you – you burn

Come out come out Little Witch       What narcissi and what lillies
     beat beat your little switch              What is this and what is that
Do and re and mi and fa                 Do and re and mi and fa
     the clouds amid the pink                my handful and strength

Maybe she will give me strength       and a long harpoon
     to go out to distant seas            to find the Little Witch

Where the sky’s caves are                angel her mother
     and foam her little skirt              on the crest of the wave

Beat beat your switch                     the ducks and the ships
     the water flows into the runnel         they go together and apart
Fa and re and me and do                Six seven and eight
     amid the blue the clearing               my good luck and talisman

Open gates and churches                for me to light a candle
     for the Little Witch secretly         to do me a miracle

How shall I sleep awake                   how run lying down
     and they say I have no heart       who am in love.
