Polar meltdown
‘I was relaxing after a long day filming just east of Barentsöya Island, in Svalbard. Our boat was far from the nearest pack-ice or land, but just before midnight, an iceberg came into view with a strange cargo: a young polar bear. It swam away from its thawing life-raft, but the picture shows clearly how climate change is affecting the Arctic.’ The polar bear is now officially endangered as the ice on which it hunts for food melts due to global warming. In 1996 the rate of loss was about 100 cubic kilometres per year. Ten years on, that loss has doubled. Pollution and the fact females only mate every two or three years add to the concerns.

Bear glare
‘I’d been so busy taking pictures of the salmon in the Ozernaya River in southern Kamchatka, east Russia, I didn’t notice the bear until it was a metre away. It was a terrible shock. I kept calm enough to take the picture but only later did I realise how serious the situation was.’ Brown bears roam mainly in far northern parts of America and Russia. But they used to live as far south as north Africa and Mexico. Excessive killing and habitat loss has made their existence more fragile. They tend to avoid humans, but can become aggressive if defending a cub or carcass.

Night pride
‘I spent five long, humid nights photographing the animals coming to drink in Namibia’s Etosha National Park. As this pride approached, I could hear them breathing. The camera flash is reflected back from their eyes as they glance towards me across the water, quite unfazed.’ Lions hunt mostly at night, though they take advantage during hot periods to ambush animals drinking at waterholes during the day. They eat hoofed animals, but occasionally try elephant or rhino, and snack on the odd rodent, hare or bird. Like all big cats, they are affected by growing human populations and most live in protected areas.

Εννοώ τη συμβίωση με τις γατούλες - φωτιστικά, αλλά τώρα που το σκέφτομαι, αν προσθέσουμε και όλα αυτά που φοβάται, μιλάμε για συνωστισμό! ;-))

Τώρα, μόλις είδα τις φωτό... Έχω πάθει πλάκα! Τόση ομορφιά και είναι δίπλα μας... Μπορούμε απλά να τη θαυμάζουμε... Έχω και πάθος με τη φωτογραφία, οπότε καταλαβαίνετε... Κάποια στιγμή θα ξεκινήσω ένα νήμα με κάποιες που έχω βρει. Promise!
Όσο για τις... γατούλες, κάποια στιγμή θα κοινηθούν και θα μπορέσει ο Σπύρος να φύγει... Θα τα καταφέρει όμως μες στο σκοτάδι;;; :@

Για τρίτη συνεχόμενη χρονιά, οι Εκδόσεις Polaris με την ευγενική χορηγία της Τράπεζας Πειραιώς διοργανώνουν και φέτος την έκθεση φωτογράφος άγριας φύσης.
Η έκθεση είναι ελεύθερη για το κοινό, διαρκεί περίπου ένα μήνα και φιλοξενείται στο εσωτερικό της στοάς Σπυρομήλιου στο City Link της Αθήνας. Οι φωτογραφίες παρουσιάζονται σε ειδικά κατασκευασμένα light boxes ώστε ο θεατής να «βλέπει» μέσα από το φακό φωτογράφου και με τη βοήθεια των λεζαντών που αφηγούνται την ιστορία της κάθε λήψης, να συμμετέχει στον κόπο, τις θυσίες, την αγωνία και τη χαρά του έργου και του καλλιτέχνη.
Από φέτος την έκθεση συνοδεύει σχετικός με το θέμα διαδικτυακός διαγωνισμός φωτογραφίας της άγριας φύσης της Ελλάδας. Ο διαγωνισμός διαρκεί το ίδιο χρονικό διάστημα με την έκθεση και είναι ανοιχτός στο κοινό τόσο για συμμετοχή όσο και για ψηφοφορία. Τα έπαθλα είναι σπουδαία δώρα με την ευγενική χορηγία της SONY.

To photograph the swans in their environment meant I had to endure the same conditions - snowstorms and high winds that roll the snow across the flat land in great waves. The storm was so bitter I wished I could have escaped along with the swans.' Every winter, huge flocks of whooper swans migrate from the far north of Europe and Asia to warmer lowlands. The Rongcheng Swan Lake nature reserve in eastern China is a major overwintering sanctuary for whooper swans. But even here, when the fresh water freezes, the birds are forced to feed in the fields, digging through the snow for grass.

'I was photographing wildlife on Guadalupe Island off the coast of Mexico as part of a major scientific project, and watched this elephant seal weanling splash around in the surf and then haul up onto the beach and fall asleep. It's a dangerous time, as big, plump babies with limited swimming skills attract great white sharks.' Female elephant seals go without food while they nurse their pups. By the time the pup is weaned, its mother is starving and abandons it to go in search of food - the youngsters are left to fend for themselves. Young elephant seals must quickly learn to catch deep-water squid, octopus, fish and crabs.

Οι τιμές, βέβαια, των αναμνηστικών λευκωμάτων ήταν τρομακτικές, αλλά το όλο θέμα αξίζει.

The show
'As it walked slowly towards the waterhole at Hobatere Lodge in Namibia, this solitary giraffe kept looking over towards four lions on a nearby ridge. One of the lions, an ambitious young male, raced down from the ridge to chase the giraffe for some distance, watched by the assembled oryx.' Lions are the giraffe's main predators, and giraffes are particularly vulnerable to attack when lying down, drinking or feeding from the ground. Unlike females, male giraffes tend to live alone, which also makes them more open to predation.
