This matches the results of a recent survey that SDL did, where 75% of their customers said that they wanted the ability to work in both environments (which also corresponds to the wishes of SDL's most precious customer, the EU).
With Studio 2021 (this name shall be the one that I'll settle on for now) you can start a project on the desktop version, switch to the online environment, because you might be sitting on a library computer without Studio installed, and then pick it up where you left off later, at home on your desktop. You can access it wherever you need to. You don't have to start the project on the desktop. You can just start it online too. It gives you access to all the necessary options, including things like minimum match values, TU penalties, updating custom fields, all file types or segmentation rules.
This doesn't mean that the online editor has "feature parity," i.e. offers all features of the desktop environment in all aspects. In some cases, this might mean there might be more advanced abilities than in the desktop tool (Daniel pointed out that the find/replace feature "is easier and more powerful online"), it's more likely to be the desktop app with more features, though. At this point, this includes the many ways that you can customize your work experience via the apps on the SDL AppStore on the desktop, which are not available for the online version -- yet. The idea is that there will be a new Online Editor-specific app store with relevant apps soon.
And there's of course one feature that's available in the Online Editor that can't be found on the desktop tool: it can run on any platform. (Remember those times when we had all those discussions about what operating systems to use and why technology vendors didn't support Linux and Mac versions of their tools -- silly us!)
To quote Daniel again, the difference between the Online Editor and the desktop tool is similar to "Word Online vs. Word Desktop, though I would argue that perhaps Online Editor is more feature rich."
The way this is packaged is with a free edition of Trados Live Essential -- that's the name of the product -- for any desktop user for 12 months. After this there will be a "small" but as of yet unnamed subscription price. (I have expressed unease about the additional fees that some tool vendors, including SDL, have started to introduce for different aspects of their technology, even for their freelance translator offerings. But I shall remain silent here, since I thought that the essentially free access that SDL has provided to their MT offering during the crisis was rather generous.)
The idea is that you can then also upgrade the Essentials product to workgroup products for three or more users (Trados Live Team Starter or Trados Live Team respectively).
Other new things include a mobile app to accept projects etc., support for YAML files (so far only available through a third-party app), better support for FrameMaker files, additional XML filtering capabilities by using elements and attributes (rather than the highly technical XPath language) and, maybe most importantly, an "advanced filter" feature that will allow you to define to the n-th degree which parts of your project should be displayed and how. Unfortunately for the less technically inclined, this will be available through regular expressions only.
When I spoke to Daniel, the release date wasn't firm yet, but the plan was mid or late July. And as you've probably seen in your inbox or elsewhere, the special sales are already going strong.

SDL Studio 2021 SR1Let's start with the most interesting new feature of this service release... What is it?
Automatic tag placement, i.e., the (semi-) automated placements of tags or inline codes in the target, aka the bane of our lives.
Trados is not the first to offer this feature. XTM, Matecat, and Lilt all have a comparable feature, but that doesn't make it any less welcome, especially since Trados continues to be the market leader. As a result, this feature will have an impact on many translators. The story of where this feature comes from in the Trados world is interesting. In 2015, SDL hired Kevin Flanagan and, along with him, his Lift product. I wrote about him all the way back in 2014 and thought his idea was tremendous. Kevin came up with a process that analyzed TMs by external and internal data (dictionaries, MT engines, termbases, etc.) to subtract subsegments which could then be used in the translation process. You won't be surprised to hear that a couple of years after Kevin was hired, this essentially became Trados's UpLIFT feature, which the Trados users among you are no doubt familiar with. One major difference between Lift and UpLIFT is that the latter does not use external resources (so, no web-based data). Interestingly, it's virtually the same technology that is now used for the automatic tag placements -- which makes sense, since part of figuring out the right placement of tags often consists of deciding which subsegments to enclose.
Trados has implemented this feature by allowing the user to activate it on a per-segment level by clicking on a button or by pressing the Ctrl+Alt+Insert keyboard shortcut (which can be customized). Segments that have then been provided with automatic tags are treated as "repaired fuzzy matches," which means that the translator will have to review them before they are confirmed and added to the TM. I like this rather cautious approach because early attempts by other tools that tried to completely automate this process were not particularly successful.
Other new features include the fact that Trados's internal machine translation engine now allows for pivoting (meaning that any available language can be paired with any other available language through English as a pivot language). It also allows for more user-friendly and keyboard-centric interactions with MultiTerm, a number of improvements in the processing of different file formats, and improvements to SDL Trados Live (such as direct processing of SDLXLIFF files). ΠΡΟΣΟΧΗ ΟΜΩΣ: Όπως παραδέχεται και ο γκουρού της SDL Paul Filkin σε απάντησή του σε ερωτήματα χρηστών, προς το παρόν η πολυδιαφημισμένη λειτουργία συνέχισης στο νέφος ενός project που αρχικά δημιουργήσατε στον υπολογιστή σας... δεν λειτουργεί! Το τεχνικό τμήμα της SDL δεσμεύεται να υλοποιήσει αυτό το χαρακτηριστικό στο εγγύς μέλλον, ενώ για την ώρα είναι μόνο δυνατόν να δημιουργήσει κανείς ένα project στο νέφος και κατόπιν να το συνεχίσει στον υπολογιστή του. Δεν είναι η πρώτη φορά που η SDL διαφημίζει μια νέα λειτουργία σε νέα έκδοση του SDL Trados Studio χωρίς αυτή να έχει υλοποιηθεί σωστά ή πλήρως.
Ρυθμίσεις αυτόματης επιχώριας προσαρμογήςΗ χρήση του σωστού φορμά ημερομηνίας κατά την αυτόματη επιχώρια προσαρμογή είναι από καιρό μια από τις γνωστές αδυναμίες του SDL Trados Studio. Η νέα έκδοση προσφέρει τη δυνατότητα ρύθμισης των επιθυμητών φορμά σύντομης και πλήρους εμφάνισης ημερομηνίας και ώρας (π.χ. 12/11/20 και 12 Νοεμβρίου 2020). Εάν ο μεταφραστής επιλέξει For TM matches, copy the TM format, η μνήμη θα προσαρμόζει το φορμά των ημερομηνιών και των ωρών στο μετάφρασμα ανάλογα με το αντίστοιχο φορμά των τμημάτων κειμένου της γλώσσας-πηγής. Αλλά όπως αποκάλυψε η έμπειρη συνάδελφος και beta-tester Emma Goldsmith στο ιστολόγιό της, συχνά η λειτουργία αυτή δεν παράγει το επιθυμητό αποτέλεσμα, άρα η νέα έκδοση δεν έχει λύση πλήρως το πρόβλημα.
Πρόσβαση στο SDL App Store και στο SDL Community μέσα από το περιβάλλον εργασίας του Studio
Αν θέλετε να ψάξετε κάποιο από τα +250 apps του App Store και να το εγκαταστήσετε ή να αναζητήσετε λύση σε κάποιο τεχνικό ζήτημα μέσα από το SDL Community, πλέον θα μπορείτε να το κάνετε μέσα από το περιβάλλον του Studio.
Υποστήριξη σε έως και 3 γλώσσες-στόχους στα projectsΆγνωστο γιατί, η SDL αποφάσισε να βάλει ένα όριο στις γλώσσες-στόχους που μπορείτε να ορίσετε σε ένα project. Αν και θεωρούμε απίθανο ένας freelancer να αναλάβει ένα έργο προς 4 ή περισσότερες γλώσσες, το όριο μπορεί να ξεπεραστεί εάν απλώς δημιουργήσετε δύο projects αντί του ενός.
Άρση του ορίου των 5 γλωσσών εργασίας στην έκδοση FreelanceΚαι πάλι, είναι ελαχιστότατοι οι συνάδελφοι που μπορούν να εργαστούν με πάνω από 5 γλώσσες, οπότε το όφελος από την αλλαγή αυτή δεν είναι μεγάλο, αλλά τουλάχιστον η SDL κατήργησε έναν παράξενο περιορισμό.
Νέα φίλτρα για την εύρεση και εμφάνιση τμημάτων κειμένουΣτην έκδοση 2021, η SDL βελτίωσε περαιτέρω το Advanced Display Filter, προσθέτοντας τη δυνατότητα να αναζητήσει κανείς τα τμήματα κειμένου που τον ενδιαφέρουν με βάση τα σχόλια που τυχόν περιέχουν, το κείμενο που περιβάλλεται από ετικέτες κώδικα (άρα και με βάση τη μορφοποίηση κειμένου), τις μεταφράσεις που προέκυψαν από ένα εύρος τιμών ατελούς ομοιότητας (fuzzy match range), τη χρωματική επισήμανση των τμημάτων κειμένου κ.ά.
Ενδιαφέρουσα είναι και η επιλογή Reverse, μέσω της οποίας μπορείτε να εμφανίσετε μόνο όσα τμήματα κειμένου ΔΕΝ πληρούν τα κριτήρια που έχετε ορίσει, ενώ πολύ χρήσιμη είναι και η δυνατότητα Generate, μέσω της οποίας μπορείτε να δημιουργήσετε ένα δίγλωσσο αρχείο .sdlxliff μόνο με τα τμήματα κειμένου που έχετε φιλτράρει.
Μεγαλύτερη ευελιξία στα Language Resources των μεταφραστικών μνημώνΜε τη νέα έκδοση θα μπορείτε να εξαγάγετε τις συντομογραφίες ή/και τα variables μιας μνήμης και να τα εισαγάγετε σε μια άλλη. Χρήσιμη δυνατότητα, για έμπειρους χρήστες μόνο.
Υποστήριξη για νέα μορφότυπα αρχείωνΌπως και σε κάθε νέα έκδοση, η λίστα με τα μορφότυπα που υποστηρίζονται έχει εμπλουτιστεί. ΠΡΟΣΟΧΗ ΟΜΩΣ: η έκδοση 2021 δεν υποστηρίζει τα παλιά δίγλωσσα αρχεία ttx. Αν δουλεύετε με αρχεία παλιών εκδόσεων, πιθανών να χρειαστεί να εγκαταστήσετε το SDL Trados Compatibility and Migration Power Pack.
Νέο σύστημα αδειώνΗ αγορά μιας μόνιμης άδειας Freelance παρέχει πρόσβαση 12 μηνών στην πλατφόρμα SDL Trados Live. Μετά το πέρας των πρώτων 12 μηνών, ο χρήστης θα πρέπει να καταβάλει ετήσια συνδρομή €75 για να εξακολουθήσει να έχει πρόσβαση στην πλατφόρμα και στα projects που τυχόν έχει αποθηκευμένα εκεί.
Κάθε φορά που παρουσιάζουμε μια νέα έκδοση του SDL Trados Studio, κλείνουμε απαντώντας το γνωστό ερώτημα: Αξίζει να την αγοράσω; Η αίσθησή μας είναι ότι αν δεν σκοπεύετε να χρησιμοποιήσετε εκτενώς τη νέα πλατφόρμα SDL Trados Live, οι βελτιώσεις και οι νέες λειτουργίες της έκδοσης 2021 ίσως να μην επαρκούν για να σας δελεάσουν να βάλετε το χέρι στην τσέπη. Αν όμως θέλετε να ακολουθήσετε την SDL στη νέα εποχή της εργασίας στο υπολογιστικό νέφος, τότε σαφώς και αξίζει να κάνετε την επένδυση. Μόνο που στη θέση σας θα περιμέναμε μέχρι να βγει το πρώτο μεγάλο update ή service release, ώστε να έχει διορθωθεί το θέμα με τη διαχείριση των local prοjects στο νέφος.
