Translating English to Greek with DVX when the source text contains translated portions
Some clients are not very much aware about CAT tools. So, in order to save money, they may provide mixed text, with bits already translated. The following is an example of FrameMaker 10 file, exported as mif. The advantage of FrameMaker 10 mif files is that they are fully Unicode compatible, in contrast with FrameMaker 7 mif files. That means that the former would display correctly source text in Greek, when it is mixed with English text.
So here is the procedure to follow in DVX for such a scenario.
— Sort text alphabetically.
— Select all Greek segments (you can also select all numeric segments while you are at that), copy them to target (F5) and lock them (Ctrl+Shift+K). (To select all segments, click on a segment, press Shift, and then click on the lowermost segment. If that does not work, press Enter first to switch to selection mode.)
— Translate what is not translated (you may Reset sorting with the second A to Z icon so that you get the natural flow of the document back).
— You can also filter out the locked content. Click All Segments, select All Unpainted Segments.
Notes
— If you want your word count to include locked segments and thus get an accurate picture of what remains to be translated, press Ctrl+Shift+W and in Additional Options, check Count Locked Segments.
— This procedure can work in all languages which use a non-Latin script, Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Hebrew, Arabic, etc.
