You're talking about the Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats which i have, in a quite peculiar edition, the peculiarity being the fact that it has both the original english text and the translation of each poem on the next page! It's called in Greek: Το Εγχειρίδιο Πρακτικής Γατικής του Γερο-Πόσουμ, and it is published by Εκδόσεις Άγρα. The translators as listed in one of the first pages of the book are Παυλίνα Παμπούδη and Γιάννης Ζέρβας .

For what it's worth and for the sake of the nature of this forum, I guess it would be interesting to quote this particular piece you've mentioned in its translation from the aforementioned book.

Here it goes:

Κάτι του γούστου της κανείς πρέπει να την τρατάρει, Λίγο πατέ ή σολομό, ή μια μπουκιά χαβιάρι. (Γνωρίζω κάποια Γάτα εγώ που άλλο μεζέ δεν θέλει Και τίποτα δεν δέχεται εκτός από κουνέλι. Βρήκα απολαυστική τη μετάφραση στα ελληνικά του Ad-dressing of Cats. Οι μεταφραστές αποφάσισαν να δώσουν έμφαση στην ομοιοκαταληξία και το μέτρο και πρόδωσαν το πρωτότυπο όσο χρειαζόταν για να πετύχουν το σκοπό τους. Για όσους θα ήθελαν να συγκρίνουν πρωτότυπο και μετάφραση, έφτιαξα ένα PDF και το καταθέτω.

Ήθελα να κάνω κάτι ανάλογο με τις δυο στήλες που κάπου είχε ξανασυζητηθεί, αλλά δεν τό'ψαξα και πολύ.

Και μένα μ'αρέσει η μετάφραση. Νομίζω ότι προκαλεί στον αναγνώστη αυτό που προκαλεί και το αρχικό κείμενο και είναι προσεγμένες οι επί μέρους λεπτομέρειες στην απόδοση, όπως π.χ. το γεγονός ότι στα Ελληνικά η γάτα είναι συνήθως θηλυκού γένους, ενώ έχω την εντύπωση πως οι Άγγλοι όταν αναφέρονται σε "cat" έχουν στον νου τους αρσενικό γάτο.

Bless you for posting the translation (I've tucked it into my volume of Eliot), and all praise to Mme. Pampoudi and/or M. Zervas!  I concur with Nikos that the form of the original has been subverted (and properly so) as much as necessary to accomplish the translator's purpose.  There has been expansion, compression, alteration with the result that, as you rightly point out, the arch, whimsical atmosphere of the original is evoked.  A free translation (or perhaps any translation except an academic exercise) should prefer a familiar form (as here, Greek dekapentasyllavi instead of English tetrameter) as a vehicle for conveying the idea and mood of the original.  The translator's great, and sometimes impossible, challenge is to render not words, but ideas.

By the way, in view of the gender of "cat" in Greek, I'd be curious to know how Pampoudi/Zervas translated some of the names in the first Possum poem ("The Naming of Cats").  I'd also love to hear their rendition of the last five lines of that poem.

Πέρα όμως απ' αυτά τα δυο, υπάρχει κι ένα άλλο Τ'όνομα το μοναδικό, το τρίτο, το μεγάλο: Το όνομα το μυστικό, ΠΟΥ ΑΝΘΡΩΠΟΣ ΔΕΝ ΞΕΡΕΙ Και Γάτα σ' άνθρωπο μπροστά ποτέ δεν αναφέρει. Όταν σε διαλογισμό λοιπόν μια Γάτα δείτε Πάντα ο λόγος είν' αυτός και να το θυμηθείτε: Σ'απύθμενους συλλογισμούς βρίσκεται βυθισμένη Για τ'όνομα το άρρητο Το αρρητορητονιάρρητο Το όνομά της το Κρυφό σκέφτεται μαγεμένη.
