Title: acronyms → acronymes, sigles (Index: En > Fr): A-Z

The alphabet, (uppercase turquoise letters), is the navigation menu for each section. For example, clicking on “C” brings you to the corresponding section “C (https://www.translatum.gr/forum/index.php?topic=60823.msg287347#msg287347)”. To return to section “A”, click the “A” at the top or bottom of each page.

L'alphabet (lettres majuscules de couleur turquoise) est le menu de navigation de chaque section. Par exemple, cliquer sur « D » transfère à la section correspondante « D ». Pour retourner sur « A », cliquer-le, au bas ou en tête de chaque page.

Acronyms and initialisms are abbreviations that are formed using the initial components in a phrase or name. These components may be individual letters (as in CEO) or parts of words (as in Benelux). There is no universal agreement on the precise definition of the various terms (see nomenclature), nor on written usage (see orthographic styling). While popular in recent English, such abbreviations have historical use in English as well as other languages. As a type of word formation process, acronyms and initialisms are viewed as a subtype of blending.

L'acronymie est l’abréviation d’un groupe de mots formée par la ou les premières lettres de ces mots dont le résultat, nommé acronyme, se prononce comme un mot normal — on parle aussi de lexicalisation. Il diffère en ce point du sigle dont les lettres sont épelées (comme « SNCF ») et de l’abréviation prononcée en long (comme « etc. »).

Un sigle est un ensemble de lettres initiales formant un mot servant d'abréviation.
Si un sigle peut se prononcer comme un mot ordinaire, comme Unesco, alors c'est aussi un acronyme. Dans les autres cas, on l'épelle : SNCF [ɛs.ɛn.se.'ɛf]. Dans ce dernier cas, il peut s'écrire avec des points après les lettres, ce qui ne se fait pas dans le premier cas. Mais dans l'usage courant, la tendance est à la suppression des points pour tous les sigles.[...]
