Bill Jemas tackles Book of Genesis in comics-translation project

by Michael Sangiacomo/Plain Dealer Reporter

Bill Jemas' latest project is a translation of the Book of Genesis.

Bill Jemas is best remembered as the publisher that pulled Marvel out of its bankruptcy of the 1990s and into the new century, which started with the re-invention of Spider-Man in "Ultimate Spider-Man."

After three years outside the business, Jemas is aiming even higher with a literal view of an even older book -- the Bible.

"Genesis Rejuvenated," which would make a cool title for a comic, takes a painstakingly close look at the book of Genesis by literally translating one word at a time. For comparison's sake, the book also shows the traditional translation. The result is that the sentences often sound like they are coming from Yoda.

For example, the King James version of the Bible begins with, "In the beginning, God created the heaven and Earth. Jemas' word-for-word translation reads, "In principles the powers that be the universe conceive."

This is not Spider-Man by any stretch, but the latest offering of Jemas' fertile imagination. Particularly fun is the chapter, "Thank God for Evolution," where Jemas tries to reconcile evolution and creationism.

Watch it Bill, they burn books that do that in some states.
