Ph.184a10; even χάριν ἐ., = χάριν εἰδέναι

  • Words ail me.
Not in Philo ("Ph.184a10" belongs with the previous LSJ reference).  Only in Julian the Apostate, Oration 8.246C, ἡμέρᾳ δὲ καὶ ἡλίῳ χάριν ἠπιστάμην, ὅτι μοι παρεῖχεν* ὁρᾶν οὗ μάλιστα ἤρων, "but I acknowledged gratitude to daylight and the sun because they allowed me to see him whom I loved best":  an amusing attempt to imitate Xenophon, Memorabilia 4.12  ἡμέρᾳ δὲ καὶ ἡλίῳ τὴν μεγίστην χάριν οἶδα ὅτι μοι Κλεινίαν ἀναφαίνουσιν, "I feel the greatest gratitude to daylight and the sun because they reveal Cleinias to me."

*Either Julian or his copyists should probably have written παρεῖχoν, since neither subject is neuter.
