Midlands → Μίντλαντς, κεντρικές περιοχές της Αγγλίας, οι μεταξύ Σκωτίας και Νότιας Αγγλίας κομητείες, Μεσαγγλία

Even my Greek teacher doesn't know this, and often has her in a muddle and we've both been wondering what the Greek word for 'Midlands' is?

We live in the East Midlands (obviously the east part of the Midlands) and we've came up with two possible words/phrases that are possibly the words we're looking for: 'Η Μέση της Αγγλίας' or 'Τα Κεντρικά'.

Can anyone help?

We call the region Μίντλαντς too (like Σίτι του Λονδίνου for the City).

Vicky's suggestion does not apply in this case as Ενδοχώρα or Μεσόγεια are used for inland and the Midlands are just that zone from east to west.

If you have to call it something in Greek, κεντρική Αγγλία would not be entirely wrong (though it means central England). If you wish to coin a word, I suggest Μεσοχώρα. But stick to Μίντλαντς if you want to be on the safe side. And if you need to translate Μεσόγεια (the region in Attica), go for Mesogeia.

What do you mean exactly? The Midlands are the name of an area in the middle of England, and I live in the East Midlands (Birmingham is West Midlands) and there are places in the North and South Midlands. Is there a specific difference between 'Μεσοχώρα', 'Μεσόγεια' and 'Eνδοχώρα?'

The Greek words μεσόγεια and ενδοχώρα mean 'inland', i.e. an area remote from the sea.

The Midlands is an area that borders with the North Sea on the east, so you cannot say it is remote from the sea.

Μεσοχώρα is a word I made up (and also the name of a village in Greece).

But couldn't 'Τα Κεντρικά' also be used as a proper noun? In such a case to mean 'central' → 'middle' → 'Midlands'?

You could say "τα Κεντρικά της Αγγλίας" but it would be a first, and not advisable when you can say "η κεντρική Αγγλία". Used on its own, "τα κεντρικά" is usually understood to mean "central office(s), head office".

The Midlands, or the English Midlands, is the traditional name for the area comprising central England that broadly corresponds to the early medieval Kingdom of Mercia. It borders Southern England, Northern England, East Anglia and Wales. Its largest city is Birmingham, and it was an important location for the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. The greater part of the area is now administered as the Government Office Regions of the West Midlands and East Midlands, though parts of the traditional Midlands are also in surrounding regions, namely Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough (East of England), Oxfordshire (South East), Gloucestershire (South West) and Northern Lincolnshire (Yorkshire and the Humber).
