"Smile" is a song, originally used as an instrumental theme in the soundtrack for the 1936 Charlie Chaplin movie Modern Times. Chaplin composed the music. While some believe the words were written by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons, the sheet music was sold with the lyrics accredited to Chaplin.

The song was originally sung by Nat King Cole, charted in 1954. "Smile" has also been recorded by jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux on her 2006 release, Half the Perfect World.

Madeleine Peyroux was born in Athens, Georgia, she grew up between Brooklyn, Southern California and Paris, though it was in the City of Light where she found her voice. As a teen she was drawn to street music, and in 1989 she started to perform with a group of buskers. She then joined the Lost Wandering Blues & Jazz Band, becoming the only female in the group, which toured around Europe for several years.

Madeleine burst onto the recording scene in 1996, with her stunning debut album Dreamland. Time magazine pronounced the groundbreaking Dreamland  "the most exciting, involving vocal performance by a new singer this year."

Madeleine Peyroux - Smile

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though its breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through for you

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, whats the use of crying
Youll find that life is still worthwhile
