Title: SDLX and TRADOS Compatibility - ttx and translation memory import / export
Post by: spiros on 06 Aug, 2005, 17:52:17
Recently I was trying to use SDLX to work on a Trados ttx file and I came up with this page with a lot of compatibility info.

Import and Export to and from Translation Memories

    * Functionality: The Import and Export of Translator's Workbench default export format (TXT).

    * When to use:

          o Import is used when you are provided with a Trados Translation Memory which is in the Translator's Workbench default export format (TXT), and you need to create an SDLX TM.
          o Export. There are two options for export. You can simply export the SDLX TM using SDL Maintain but our recommended method is to create the Trados TXT from SDLX ITD files (Export Option 2).

    * How it's done:

Import the Trados TXT file.

   1. Open SDL Maintain
   2. Open an existing SDLX TM or create a New one
   3. From the TM menu, select Import > Trados
   4. Follow the Import Wizard

Export option 1 - An SDLX TM to the Trados TXT format.

   1. Open SDL Maintain
   2. Open the TM for export
   3. From the TM menu select Export > Trados
   4. Follow the Export Wizard

Export option 2 - SDLX ITD’s (Translation files) to the Trados TXT format.

   1. Open SDL Maintain or SDL Edit

          a. In SDL Maintain - from the TM menu select Export > File list to Trados
          b. In SDL Edit - from the File menu select Trados then either Export to Trados (single file) or Export file list to Trados (multiple files)

   2. Set languages and add ITD files (drag and drop is quickest)
   3. Select name and location for the resulting Trados TXT file
   4. Click OK

Import and Export of Trados unclean RTF files

    * Functionality: To import, translate and export Trados unclean RTF files.

    * When to use: This method is used when you are provided with Trados unclean RTF files, even if they have been pre-leveraged, and are expected to return fully translated unclean RTF files. Essentially, you are using SDLX as your preferred editing environment.

    * How it's done:

Import

   1. Start Project Wizard
   2. Select to import files
   3. Select RTF as your file type
   4. Follow the wizard as normal. Selection of Segmentation rules is not required as the files are already pre-segmented in Trados and that will be maintained during import
   5. Translate resulting ITD’s in SDL Edit

Export

   1. Start Project Wizard
   2. Select to export files
   3. Follow the wizard
   4. Return resulting translated unclean RTF files to client for "cleaning up" in Trados

Use of Trados TTX files within SDLX

    * Functionality: To open, translate and save Trados TTX files.

    * When to use: This method is used when you are provided with Trados TTX files, even if they have been pre-leveraged, and are expected to return fully translated TTX files. Essentially, you are using SDLX as your preferred editing environment.

    * How it's done:

Import

   1. Open SDL Edit
   2. From the File menu, select Open Translation
   3. Using the Files of type drop-down box, select TRADOStag Documents (*.ttx). Locate the TTX file and click Open
   4. From the File menu, select Save As
   5. Using the Files of type drop-down box, select SDLX Translation Files (*.itd)
   6. Important: The name of the TTX file will still be present in the File name section. Remove the .ttx extension and click Save
   7. Translate the ITD file

Export

   1. Once the translation is complete, save the file as TTX
   2. From the File menu, select Save As
   3. From the Files of type box select TRADOStag Documents (*.ttx)
   4. Important: The name of the ITD file will still be present in the File name section. Remove the .itd extension and click Save
   5. Return resulting translated TTX files to client for "cleaning up" in Trados

Originating TTX files for translation in Trados

    * Functionality: To create a TTX file in SDLX that can be translated in Trados.

    * When to use: This method can be used when you are using SDLX to complete a project but a translator wishes to use Trados as their editing environment.

    * How it's done:

Export from SDLX
TTX files can be created in SDLX for translation in Trados from any of the tagged formats that SDLX supports (HMTL, XML, SGML etc.), provided Trados can also create a TTX file from that format.

   1. Import the original files into SDLX to create ITD files. Note: If the intention is to apply a translation memory to the file in Trados make sure you use the TagEditor style segmentation rules when creating the ITD’s
   2. Open the ITD in SDL Edit
   3. From the File menu select Trados then Export to TRADOStag TTX format
   4. In the resulting dialog select a suitable location and name the file. Click on Save
   5. Do not delete the ITD files. They are needed for the "harvesting" process. (See below)

Note: The resulting TTX files can be translated in Trados in the normal manner. However, the TTX files are not suitable for "cleaning up" in Trados to create the final target documents.

Import into SDLX (Harvesting)
Harvesting is the process of importing the translated information from the TTX files back into the original ITD files. Harvesting does not create a new ITD.

   1. Open one of the original ITD files in SDL Edit
   2. From the File menu select Trados then Harvest exported TRADOStag TTX translation
   3. In the resulting dialog select the corresponding TTX file. Click on Open. The translations from the TTX file will be imported into the ITD.
   4. The ITD file is now ready to confirm, update into the Translation memory and must be used to create the final translated files
