Plato, Protagoras 342e6:  τὸ λακωνίζειν πολὺ μᾶλλόν ἐστιν φιλοσοφεῖν ἢ φιλογυμναστεῖν ("To be Lacedaemonian is much more to love wisdom than to love gymnastics.")

το λακωνίζειν εστί φιλοσοφείν → brevity is the soul of wit, brevity is the best policy, less is more

Well then, I said, I will try to explain to you my own feeling about this poem. Now philosophy is of more ancient and abundant growth in Crete and Lacedaemon than in any other part of Greece, [342b] and sophists are more numerous in those regions: but the people there deny it and make pretence of ignorance, in order to prevent the discovery that it is by wisdom that they have ascendancy over the rest of the Greeks, like those sophists of whom Protagoras was speaking2; they prefer it to be thought that they owe their superiority to fighting and valor, conceiving that the revelation of its real cause would lead everyone to practise this wisdom. So well have they kept their secret that they have deceived the followers of the Spartan cult in our cities, with the result that some get broken ears [342c] by imitating them, bind their knuckles with thongs, go in for muscular exercises, and wear dashing little cloaks,3 as though it were by these means that the Spartans were the masters of Greece. And when the Spartans wish to converse unrestrainedly with their sophists, and begin to chafe at the secrecy of their meetings, they pass alien acts against the laconizing set4 and any other strangers within their gates, and have meetings with the sophists unknown to the foreigners; while on their part they do not permit any of their young men [342d] to travel abroad to the other cities—in this rule they resemble the Cretans—lest they unlearn what they are taught at home. In those two states there are not only men but women also who pride themselves on their education; and you can tell that what I say is true and that the Spartans have the best education in philosophy and argument by this: if you choose to consort with the meanest of Spartans, [342e] at first you will find him making a poor show in the conversation; but soon, at some point or other in the discussion, he gets home with a notable remark, short and compressed—a deadly shot that makes his interlocutor seem like a helpless child. Hence this very truth has been observed by certain persons both in our day and in former times—that the Spartan cult is much more the pursuit of wisdom than of athletics; for they know that a man's ability

 αυτός φαίνεται ένα τίποτε. Στη συνέχεια όμως, σ᾽ ένα οποιοδήποτε σημείο της συζήτησης, γυρνά και σου πετά ξαφνικά μια εντυπωσιακή φράση, σύντομη κι όλο νεύρο, σαν φοβερός ακοντιστής, έτσι που ο συνομιλητής του να φαίνεται κοντά του σαν μωρό παιδί, τίποτε περισσότερο. Αυτό το έχουν καταλάβει αρκετοί και από τους σημερινούς και από τους παλιούς, δηλαδή ότι καλύτερα λακωνίζει κανείς φιλοσοφώντας παρά ασκώντας τη γυμναστική, αφού παρατήρησαν ότι μόνο ένας άνθρωπος με τέλεια μόρφωση μπορεί να εκφράζεται με αυτό τον τρόπο

Ora, tanto hoje como ontem, há quem tenha percebido esse pormenor — que admirar os Lacónios é muito mais apreciar a sabedoria que o exercício físico — e quem saiba que só o homem que recebeu uma esmerada educação pode proferir semelhante palavra. Nessa situação encontravam-se Tales de Mileto, Pítaco de Mitilene, Bias de Priene, o nosso Sólon, Cleobulo de Lindos, Míson de Queneia e, em sétimo lugar, Quílon da Lacedemónia. Todos estes foram entusiastas, apaixonados e discípulos da educação dos Lacedemónios e qualquer pessoa poderá constatar que a sua sabedoria era idêntica à deles, uma palavra breve e memorável que cada um deles proferiu. Estes mesmos, reunidos todos izeram oferenda da sua sabedoria a Apolo no seu templo em Delfos, grafando as máximas que toda a gente celebra, Conhece-te a ti mesmo e Nada em excesso. Ora bem, porque estou eu a dizer estas coisas? Porque era este o modo de expressão da ilosoia dos antigos, uma brevidade lacónica

Pues la filosofía es muy antigua y vasta entre los griegos de Creta y Lacedemonia y hay muchísimos sofistas en esta tierra; pero ellos lo niegan y fingen ser ignorantes, para que no sea evidente que su sabiduría sobrepasa a la de los otros griegos (…) Vosotros reconoceríais que hablo con verdad y que los lacedemonios están educados de manera insuperable tanto para la filosofía como para los discursos, a partir de lo siguiente: si alguien quiere conversar con el más negligente de los lacedemonios, encontrará que en sus discursos mayoritariamente se muestra como alguien negligente, pero, cuando casualmente se dice algo, lanza una palabra digna del discurso, breve y concentrada como si fuese un poderoso arquero, de manera que su interlocutor no parece mejor que un niño. De esto mismo también se han percatado algunos de los contemporáneos y de los antiguos, de que laconizar es más bien filosofar que amar la gimnasia, sabiendo que ser capaz de pronunciar tales palabras es propio de un hombre cabalmente educado
