Dear List Members,

This is the fourth year CELT Athens is running this course leading to the Institute of Linguists Exams for a Diploma in Translation (English to Greek or Greek to English options).

The course is run entirely by distance. Course description follows on:

Diploma in Translation run entirely by distance

Aims of the course
This course aims to develop the skills of translating a wide range of text-types from English into Greek or Greek into English. It is intended for native speakers of Greek or English with a very high level of in the target language as well as in the source language who wish to become professional translators. Those who successfully complete all parts of the assessment will be awarded the Institute of Linguists Diploma in Translation, the most prestigious internationally recognised award for professional translators.

Course Structure
CELT Athens offers a part time option run mainly by distance via e-mail. Course participants send in assignments, receive input and feedback, and attend individual tutorials on areas arising from their work. The course is completed in twelve months over four terms or over two academic years. Fees are the same for both options but the centre reserves the right to accept candidates for one or the other option depending on their performance at entry point and their development during the course.

Diploma Student Support
Apart from communication via e-mail, CELT  has uploaded a number of pages on the web whose sole aim is to support and inform its students so that they have access to important links leading to lexicons, articles and databases free of charge. The web address is announced exclusively to those registering on the course. This is a sub-domain of the CELT Athens website set up for the sole purpose of providing support and guidance to those attending the course by distance. Only students registered to the CELT Athens Dip IoL course have access to these pages at present. CELT Athens also offers its candidates a highly specialised Self-Access Centre for trainees on the course and a Lending Library facility to its candidates. The  library contains  many of the theoretical texts related to the course content. Students who can come into the centre can use the library free of charge.

Course Content
In the first term, fundamental issues in the theory of translation are covered and the following input areas are explored

* Contrastive Analysis of Greek and English
* Stylistic Variation in Greek and English
* Grammar & Syntax
* Semantics & Discourse Analysis

In addition, a variety of general texts are set for translation. The second term focuses on the translation of literary, business or technology  texts and the third term on  texts drawn from the fields of science, social science or law depending on the fields chosen by each candidate.  The last term focuses on further development of translation skills and exam technique training for the Institute of Linguists examination.

To Apply
Candidates should be educated native speakers of Greek ( with a Certificate of Proficiency Grade B or higher) or  English with an equivalent level of proficiency in Greek. Whether or not candidates already possess such a certificate, their level of English and Greek is examined by CELT. Selection is made on the basis of qualifications, a pre-course examination testing competence in both English and Greek as well as existing ability to translate text.

Candidates can apply at any time of the year. Current candidates include both Athens residents as well as residents in other countries, such as the UK and the US.

Awards & Certification
All  participants receive a Certificate of Attendance. Those who perform well in the internally assessed assignments are entered for the Institute of Linguists Diploma in Translation examination, which is held in January each year. Successful candidates are awarded the Diploma in Translation.

About the Centre
CELT Athens is approved by the  Institute of Linguists  in the UK to run Diploma in Translation courses. Tutorial support is organised by linguists and professional translators with an extremely high level of competence in both languages concerned, while the methods employed are such as one would expect of a leading teacher-training centre.

The tutors hold post graduate degrees in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics and are bilingual speakers in both languages.
