The etymologists Beekes, Chantrain, and Frisk all agree that folk-etymology associated the tree vitex agnus castus (ἄγνος λύγος) with purity (ἁγνότης).  Despite Pausanias' explanation, I'm sure the Spartans made the same association with regard to their local Asclepius.
