The term Veld, or Veldt, refers primarily (but not exclusively) to the wide open rural spaces of South Africa or southern Africa and in particular to certain flatter areas or districts covered in grass or low scrub. The word comes from the Afrikaans and Dutch languages, and is also found in some dialects of Low German and means, literally, 'field'. However, this simple translation does not convey the subtleties of the many idiomatic nuances of the term. Veld can be compared to the Australian terms 'outback' or 'bush', to 'the prairie' of North America, or to the 'pampas' of South America but the comparisons are not exact. A Yorkshireman might equate "wandering across the moors" to "walking through the veld". The term 'veld', in Low German usage, is used to mean a place which is generally overgrown or has gone fallow, such as a thicket or a field which has become overgrown from lack of maintenance. It also generally has similar connotations as in Afrikaans and Dutch.

Nαι, αλλά επειδή πρόκειται για λογοτεχνία, έχω την αίσθηση ότι ούτε ο Αμερικανός αναγνώστης ξέρει τι είναι το veldt, και ακόμα λιγότερο ο Έλληνας.
Context:
Between there and here a clutch of cheap hotels, dusty liquor stores, car lots selling vehicles of dubious provenance; a tatty herd of people waiting on street comers with nothing very positive in mind; a veldt of concrete bunkers housing businesses that will swallow countless hollow lives without ever being quoted on NASDAQ.

Αμ, γιατί ο μέσος Έλληνας ή ξένος αναγνώστης ξέρει όλα τα είδη βλάστησης στα απέραντα λιβάδια κάθε χώρας;

Ίσως ένα σκέτο «αχανής έκταση» θα ήταν αρκετό στην πρόταση αυτή.

Η λέξη είναι ολλανδική και σημαίνει λιβάδι. Στη λογοτεχνία το κάνεις ό,τι θες.

H αρχική μου σκέψη ήταν λιβάδι, αλλά ακούγεται πολύ παράξενο. Μάλλον ταιριάζει καλύτερα η αχανής έκταση.

Συγγνώμη, δεν έγινα σαφής. Το "λιβάδι" ήταν μια πρόσθετη πληροφορία. Και στη Νότια Αφρική όταν λένε veld δεν αναφέρονται σε κάποια field ή meadow. Το συνδέουν με το, πώς το λες, "wide open...", και με το ίδιο σκεπτικό το χρησιμοποιεί και ο συγγραφέας σου.

In any case I would think that ερημία would be closer than λιβάδι to the image of a concrete wasteland that the writer is trying to convey.
