Hospital Begins Interpreter Training for Bilingual Staff
The Saint Peter's Healthcare System of Central New Jersey, in partnership with the Health Research and Educational Trust, has launched a training initiative to educate bilingual staff in health care interpreting. "Health care providers, now more than ever, are faced with meeting numerous mandates from federal, state, and accrediting organizations—mandates that call for advancing effective communication with diverse patient populations," says Susan J. D'Angelo, one of the site coordinators of the bilingual training program. She adds that it is imperative for the hospital to “provide linguistically and culturally appropriate services." Central New Jersey is home to one of the largest multi-ethnic populations in the U.S., including the highest percentage of speakers of Estonian, Gujarathi, Hindi, Hungarian, Marathi, Sindhi, Telegu, and Turkish. The bilingual staff program at Saint Peter’s uses a standardized medical interpreter curriculum that emphasizes the value of cross-cultural linguistic services. Students are taught the role of the interpreter as well as national standards, policies, procedures, and mandates. They learn how to manage unique and complex situations through role playing, video, and case-based discussions.
