= "a stranger only passing through"?  or is this not a metaphor, but literal?

Of course it is a metaphore but very apt. In the translation the word πουλι/πτηνό should be used. I would suggest "περαστικό πουλί". Other, more poetic expressions would be: διαβατάρικο πουλί που πετά πάνω από το χωράφι/πετούμενο από μακρινούς τόπους που διέρχεται πάνω από τον αγρό.
