During a dive, you want a simple way to categorize fish as you spot them. One technique is to divide a
slate into boxes, one for each family group you would expect to see. You might also carry a fish identification
slate that reminds you about family characteristics (more detail on these shortly).
Another important point is to leave room on your
slate to sketch or describe a fish that doesn’t fit into any category.
If you discover a “mystery” fish you can’t identify, note its distinguishing marks and sketch it on your
slate.
A reference line from a boat or buoy will make your ascents/descent easier, and for reliable communication, take your
slate.
As you and your buddy swim the pattern, it usually works best if one of you navigates while the other looks for the object. The “navigator” can track your position on a
slate or NavFinder and note submerged landmarks to aid in navigation, and use the other techniques in the Underwater Navigation section.
