"Buck" (with the original meaning "male deer") has for centuries been an affectionate term for "young man" (Onions cites Old Norse bokki, "my good fellow). Fathers are still fond of calling their sons "Buck," "Bucko," and "Bucky." Buck=dollar is from the days when a buckskin (deerskin) was actually worth one dollar.
