Hello,

As I am half Greek, I have family in Greece. Most of them I haven't seen in my entire life, others I haven't seen for 15 years and for one family member, that was the last time I ever seen him. Fifteen years ago, when I was five years old.

My great-grandfather got ill, his health started going worse and it only lasted a couple of days before he passed away, which was last sunday, at the age of 93. Ever since, my great-grandmother, who is 92 years of age, has been doing worse every day. She doesn't eat and hardly sleeps and does nothing but crying all day. Today I received the news she too, is close to death.

I lost my chance in ever telling my great-grandfather how much I love him and how much I have missed him, over the past fifteen years, but I don't want to lose the last chance I get with my great-grandmother.
And even though I would really love to pay her a visit, circumstances won't allow me. And so I want to write her a letter. Not a very long one, but a letter that tells her I love her and I miss her, to let her know I have thought about her every single day, for the past fifteen years.
Unfortunately, she only speaks Greek, and even though my Greek is ok while speaking it, my writing is like that of a 4-year old.

This is why I need somebody to translate me a short amount of text, a short letter, from English to Greek. You might be somebody who is able to, or you might know somebody who is able to, but either way, I need all the help I can get with this and I need it soon, because she might not have that many days to live anymore.

Please PM me, or post a comment and I'll PM you, if you can and are willing to help me. Even the slightest help, the try alone, means more to me than words can ever explain.

Thank you in advance.

This is the text I would love to have translated in greek writing, please?:

Quote
Dear Grandmother,

I am sorry about grandfather Pagonis. I wish I could be there for you in this difficult time and I hope to be able to visit you very soon, but all I can do now is write this letter to you.

I have missed you very much over all the years I haven't seen you, but I thought about you every day. I wondered every day how you were doing and all I wanted to do was come to see you, but I was too afraid. Afraid that you might not know who I am when you seen me.

Even though I haven't seen you for so long, you have always been in my heart and I missed you every day. I know this letter can't make up for all the time we lost, but I hope it will make you feel like I am there, telling this to you, instead of writing it in a letter.

Love you always,

Antoinette.

- Anna

Though this letter breaks forum rules, I would like it to remain posted. Any volunteers, post your offer to help here within the next ten minutes, or I'll do it.

If I may ask, how does it violate the rules? I'm not being disrespectful, I really appreciate your help, but I would like to know how it violated the rules, just so I know this for the future posts I'll make. :)

Forum rules are here: https://www.translatum.gr/forum/index.php?topic=35.0

And here's the one you're breaking:

1.4 If you ask for translation help please limit your query to 12 words and ALWAYS provide CONTEXT. If you want help with something bigger than that then you may contact one of the members or directly Translatum Translation Services for professional translation. If you want a free draft translation you can always use Greek machine translation.

I am so sorry, I didn't know where to find the rules. Thank you for pointing them out.

I hope I can still get it translated? I would owe the person to do this for life!

Sure. The ten minutes are over. Give me another ten and I'll get back to you. It's Friday evening and everybody else seems to be out.

I wish I could do something in return, but all I can do is translate Dutch>English and English>Dutch.

I'll keep that in mind, Anna. I've recently edited the translations of two books related to the Netherlands, and it was a nightmare trying to find the best way to transliterate some of the lesser known proper nouns (place names, mostly) into Greek.

But there's a lot of good will and give-and-take in this forum, as in many forums, so I'm sure that, given the opportunity, you would have been the first one to help. And in any case, we don't go around here carrying a pair of scales, weighing favours. So don't mention it.

Tell me this: Do you live in the States or in the Netherlands?

Netherlands; born and raised, not hoping to spend the rest of my life here.
I dream of going to England and study psychology at a university, had my mind set on the UEA, but knowing myself, that dream could change between now and the very next ten minutes.
I tell myself I don't care, but I feel as if I should want to live my dream, that it should matter to me, yet all I do is lurk from behind a curtain, staring at the stars way up high in the unexplored darkness, and I dream...

I want to write my own book before I pack my bags, and leave it as a legacy, to my mother and father, my baby sister and cousins. I want to tell them my truth, without having to face them, without having to look them in the eyes... and leave, before the things I own, start to own me.

I'm drifting off. :) Netherlands it is.

A place is what we make of it (or what it makes of us). I always thought that, next to England, the Netherlands would be the other place in the north I would like to live in. Write that book -- and then read it to them. And then go out in the world and write many, many interesting "books". All the best, Anna.
