December Tip for Faster Document Processing

Speed Up Your Scanning and OCR Tasks Using Predefined Templates

Why repeat (and repeat!) the tasks involved in scanning and processing text-based documents, when ABBYY FineReader 9.0 can make it point-and-click easy to process text pages: Learn how Creating Templates can save you significating time and effort.

The Easy Way To Speed Up Your OCR Tasks

Do you process multiple text documents with similar structures and layouts such as confirmation letters, registration cards and contracts? Then consider creating reusable templates to maximize the speed of your OCR tasks. Templates will help you save significant time, by eliminating the need to analyze individual documents with like elements – i.e. where the information you need is of the same length and in the same location on each page. By loading pre-defined templates, you can bypass having to analyze individual pages and move directly to reading the pages—a huge timesaver when processing dozens or hundreds of text-based pages.

Here's how to create an area template:

1. Open an image and either let FineReader analyze the layout automatically or draw the desired areas manually.

2. From the Areas menu, select the Save Area Template...command. In the saving dialog box, provide a name for your template and click Save.

Important! To be able to use an area template, you must scan all the documents in the set using the same resolution value.
1. In the Document window, select the pages you wish to apply an area template to.

2. From the Areas menu, select the Load Area Template...

3. In the Open Area Template dialog box, select the desired area template (area template files have the *.blk extension).

4. In the same dialog box, next to Apply to, select Selected pages to apply the template to the selected pages.

Note: Select All pages to apply the template to all the pages in the current ABBYY FineReader document.

5. Click the Open button.
