Canada Offers Pay Boost for Literary Translations

The Canada Council for the Arts will oversee the disbursement of $5 million in funds for French-to-English literary translations. The council has also mandated an increase in pay rates for literary translators, retroactive to April 1, 2009. Translation rates for literary fiction and children's books will go from 14 cents per word to 18 cents, while rates for translated drama will increase from 16 cents to 20 cents. Rates for poetry will jump from 20 cents to 25 cents. Cormorant Books Publisher Marc Cote believes the positive change in translation rates will help increase the number of literary translators in Canada. The council has also increased the maximum amount paid for a single work from $20,000 to $25,000, and funding will now be available for titles with less than a 5,000 copy print run. Publishers will be allowed to translate and receive funding for eight titles at the same time. The previous publisher maximum for translating titles was six. The money is part of the government's $1.1 billion Road Map for Linguistic Duality program.
