At the Argive Heraeum, games and a sacrifice of 100 bulls were held. The victor in the games, which were called Hekatombaia or Heraia, won a bronze shield (aspis).
Pindar-scholion to Nemean 10.1: Ἐν Ἄργει τελεῖται τῇ Ἥρᾳ ἀγὼν ἱερὸς Ἑκατόμβαια, ὃν καὶ Ἥραια καλοῦσιν· ἐν γὰρ τῇ τοῦ ἀγῶνος πανηγύρει ἑκατὸν βοῦς θύουσι τῇ Ἥρᾳ.
Pindar-scholion to Olympian 13.9: καὶ τὰ ἐπὶ τῷ Ἄργει, ἔνθα ἐτελεῖτο τὰ Ἥραια τὰ καὶ Ἑκατόμβαια· ἐδίδοτο δὲ τῷ νικήσαντι ἀσπὶς χαλκῆ.
